Wow.........I was shocked to hear Tower Records is going out of business! They are liquidating and have the entire store on sale now. Last night everything was 10% off the lowest marked price, but they pealed off all the low price stickers and had the really high "original" prices on everything so the discounts didn't add up to much less (if anything less) than what you would have paid there anyway on a regular day. Geez. I'm sure in the coming days it will get pumped up to a higher discount, then it will be a madhouse in there! Is this any indication of the state of the music industry to you?

I'll have to stop at the one at the corner near my house next week and see if they have anything worth picking up that's marked down.

I have an Aces High 45 single with the Tower Records pricetag since inside the sleeve. $2.99 I think it was way back when..

Yeah i have known they were going out of Biz for a while. I work for a major label. Its pretty crazy and yet a big indication. Stores like Best Buy sell CD's for so cheap that record stores like Tower just can't compete. Best Buy makes little profit from their CD's but they figure you will end up purchasing other items in their store if you go in and buy a CD.

Tower only makes money off of profit from CD sales.

In a way this is good for the consumer however once stores like Tower are all gone outlets like Best Buy will slowly start raising their prices on CD's because they will pretty much have the monopoly.

Used to visit the Tower Records in Honolulu and Pearl City...in Hawaii. And the one by the Sports Arena in San Diego....when i lived in Cali...

Yeah , they closed the one here a year or so ago....Downloading just kills music...Also Towers high prices didnt help much either.

They were always a bit on the high side and my wife hated them for that.
I liked the more obscure stuff that could be had.

Although truth be told the last time I was in there was to stuff Maidens flyers in between all the IM CD's. :)

Santee had a pretty good turnout so it must have worked.

The last time I went to Tower was to get the new Rob Zombie a few months ago. They are on sale for $9.99 for the first week, then get bumped up to the regular price. Well, it was a day after the sale was no longer and they forgot to take the $9.99 tag off the rack, so when I took it up to the counter and the new higher price scanned in, I told them that's not what price was posted on the rack. So I was the last one to get that CD at the sale price.

Might have something to do with the kind of music they promoted since the 90's... That and the internet killed the need for hard copies, and now only live shows are left.

Did you have an arguement about it with them? I had one once in HMV cos me and friend wanted the same dvd but one was priced £5 and the other £7, so we argued till we both got them at £5. They shouldn't have the exact same dvd marked as two different prices.

This is really sad. Tower was the best national chain that supported underground music. I used to hang out the one on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno frequently, listening to the selections and being seduced the many bands on the Century Media and Nuclear Blast labels.

I'll never forget when I first heard My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans." Tower had it displayed for listening, and I was blown away by the melancholy melody infused with raw agression. I had that tingly feeling going down my spine - you all know the feeling - it happens when you hear something totally amazing.

I stopped shopping Tower once eBay/Half.com/Amazon got pretty big and I could find good used copies for about half the price. Nonetheless, it's sad to see Tower go. They've always been a friendly outlet for band neglected by radio.

No, I didn't have to argue with them. I told them the price on the rack said $9.99, so they asked me to bring the sign with the old price on it from the rack to the counter. I walked back to the rack, took the plastic sign out of the bin and handed it to them at the counter. They scanned the CD, manually changed the price and that was it. :)

Tower Records! I got my first Iron Maiden albumn, "Powerslave" on vinyl LP at the Tower Records on Van Nuys Blvd. "back in the day" (as the saying goes).

I went to the one across the street from the Space Needle as well, and another near UW if I remember...its been years since I've been to Seattle. In Spokane I remember the Strawberry Jams, and Eucalyptus Records as well. Did you ever go to 206 Records in Bellevue? Thats the little record store that Queensryche got their start from. Got my copy of the 1st EP there.:kickass:
