So... what do you guys use for tracking clean guitars?

Dynamic, SDC, LDC, a multi-mic setup?

Compress on input or during the mix? (Or both?) I've always found compression damn near necessary for clean stuff. YMMV.

Pod XT with the L2A2 emulation enabled, straight into your DAW of choice?

And "I only record/play tr00 br00tal metal! I don't use clean! :kickass:" isn't a valid answer here. :p

the best recordings (of clean guitar) I've done recently were using my JC-120 with sm57 and m160 (ribbon) as close mics and a XY stereo-pair of km184 in about 1.5m distance.

main sound with the 57, add m160 for warmth and fullness and then add the stereo for the chorus and width.

worked great, love what came out

Wow! that must have sounded superb.
Imo the JC-120 is still not topped when it comes to clean sounds.

For typical 'metal' cleans or sterile cleans, JC-120 rules. But personally, I fucking love the original Fender twin, Bandmaster, Super, and a few others.

I went through a huge clean stage.

Whicht guitar/pickup combo did you use with that?

how do you guys think a stereo set up of a matched paid of rode nt5s would work out in the middle of a room with 57 and 609 on the grille???

Do you need a stereo room sound on your cleans? I'd say you'd be fine with just the one NT5. The NT5 is a nice mic; much more "natural" sounding than the other inexpensive SDCs I've tried. But were it me, I'd dispense with the dynamics entirely and just throw one of the NT5s on the cab. I like 'em on guitar cabs, though I mix 'em with a 57 for gain stuff.

nice amp, like vox or fender twin. i prefer passive pickups for clean. dinamic or ribbon or condenser mic close to the speaker and a condenser for the room. set the mic position to your taste, there's no mystery, just have to spend some time doing that.

chorus on clean???
ick
have i just stepped into a time warp?
i like the dsl 100 on crunch channel, or the orange rocker with the gain low so it breaks upa little. Then a 57, or a royer 121 or maybe an ldc, depends on the sound. or maybe an ac30..

the mesa and 5150 are shit at clean (for the sound i like)

but then again i'm not into sterile cleans. i like a bit of grit and breakup.
