I do this sometimes... usually no more than 2 or 3 bpm slower. still helps. i find it works better with good drummers though... if they're already rushing it, it's not gonna make it easier to slow it down.

something tells me you'd really need to put "marker" cuts on bar lines before applying the tempo change, or you could get lost in more complex songs

I don't think anyone will notice if the consecutive uninterrupted cymbal hits in a piece are a little bit late if you're only slowing by a couple of BPM. Hell, it might even add a cool sorta swing in slower sections as long as you don't let it go too far
