That singer IS Pagan Altar. But I agree he can be hard to take at times especially live. Very squired taste like Mark Shelton vocals, lesser degree King Diamond.

Ha! That's one of Diabolik's major gripes with this band as well.
Yeah, as mentioned above, definitely an acquired taste.
As much as I love Pagan Altar, its not an everyday band for me.
But when the mood hits, their music REALLY hits the spot.

As I said, its an acquired taste.
For me, the standout part of their music is the lo-fi lead guitar.

It amazes me that whenever this type of thread is resurrected that people don't mention Isole. I thought the release from 2008 Bliss of Solitude was epic.

I never listened to Isole. Never was much into Unorthodox, even though I have to releases by them on the shelf.

Maybe you should re-visit Unorthodox? I feel a little Hawkwind meets Saint Vitus meets Nachtmystium in their stuff...
I like Isole a lot, although they really are a bit too "polished" for my taste... Normally I like my doom a bit more "dirty". They remind me of Memory Garden with better vocals.

I thought about mentioning them, I so dig 'em. Which we carry them as well (plug).
I am very picky with doom then again I am with everything I suppose. One My Dying Bride band is enough, November's Doom is pushing it. I like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus up until they started sounding like the same band. And those bands that are often pointed out to have a Candlemass quality will they don't. I like Saint Vitus but the heeps of Saint Vitus worshipping bands get really boring after a while. And I really like the more occultic doomy stuff.

Doom's quickly becoming my favorite metal subgenre, haha. Been stuck on black metal for the past few years and while I was also really into death metal, power metal, and thrash (to an extent) I always just kinda got bored with doom. Not so much these days...

I'm been getting heavily into doom metal over the past year, although I'm mainly stuck with bands that leans towards epic/prog/hard rock/NWOBHM/and traditional metal along with their doom. I'm all about folky/melancholy atmosphere, powerful march-like rhythms, theatrical vocalists and just plain old rocking riffs. Here are some of my favorites that have emerged from the doomy spectrum:

Last year a few people in this forum were asking for a vendor to bring doom to Progpower so I did, probably more doom than that place had ever collective seen over all the years.
But no one seemed to touch the doom once it was there.
So hey keep this thread going and build some doom interest.

Yes, but now doom is an accepted genre around these parts.
It wasn't before.

Every album is different. I like the first one for the rawness a hallow sound it just seems empty which adds to the doominess. 'Beyond the Crimson Horizon' was a little more "progressive/power metal" sort of Fates Warning. 'Through the Darkest Hour' seemed to be their pentacle I think.
'Downfall' was what I understand was the band's least favorite and could been seen as their "Cold Lake" It was a bit different but not horribly, and it sported a Christian Death cover (personal favorite band).
'Adigo' took a few listens but then it had me. And their cover of Heaven and Hell is the best cover EVER of that song. By the way their cover of 'Shame on the Night' on the Dio Nuclear Blast trib kicks ass too. I know this comment will bring out the pitchforks but it is so much better than the Jorn cover, Solitude make it heavy.
By the time of 'Alone' Solitude and Candlemass sounded to much a like. It is all good stuff but nothing overly amazing as in both band's earlier days.

Yeah I noticed that. It is the WHW thing and since doom has somewhat Glenn and Progpower's ok then people here are falling in line as if it were grape punch.

I know of all those bands and I own albums by Gates of Slumber, Pentagram and Reverend Bizarre. I like Gates of Slumber and the Rev is pretty badass, but as a general rule those really slow, really dreary bands don't hit the spot so much. Any stoner-oriented I don't care for, either.
Oh yeah, been listening to Litany, Wishdoom and the Funeral Circle EP these days, very god material. Wishdoom is very classy, fans of the Hellenic epic/doom metal will dig it.
Good recap. SA kinda tweaked their sound a bit over the years, kinda like Trouble, although that might be opening up a can of worms to say that...ha!
In regards to Alone...I've always been a SA fan, and I know that, today, it's too easy to start comparing to Candlemass, but I think that Alone is just a solid, sludgy slab of doomy masterpiece. When I put that album on, it just goes and goes and transports me into a gutteral, slow-mo kinda doom-groovy vibe that I really just dig. Some may scoff, but I just totally dig the feel of the album from start-to-finish.
And, no...I don't do drugs...
