....tremendous The Hunter (Mastodon album)

I'm in the same boat, Kevin. Crack the Skye really opened the door to Mastodon for me. Everything before that was kinda overrated, imho.

I thought Leviathan totally sucked and was so overrated. Blood Mountain on the other hand was better. Crack The Skye was good...but I didn't think it was that mindblowing. It's wasn't that I wasn't down with the direction of the record, I thought that was great how they did a different, trippy record vs. the rock but it could have been more solid for me. I dunno I'll give it another listen...something was just missing. This new record...I'll listen to it eventually.

I can't stop listening to Stargasm now. The vocal harmonies are fantastic.

Stargasm is great, and was initially my favorite, but I think Dry Bone Valley is just amazing for the vocals; probably the best vocals on the album. That song has a very distinct, un-Mastodon like sound to it and reminds me more of "proggy grunge" song if that makes any sense.

After having listened to the album maybe ten times, I think my four favorites are Black Tongue, Stargasm, Dry Bone Valley and Spectrelight.

Does anyone else think of CoC when listening to Spectrelight?

It's truly a brilliant song. This whole album is really spectacular, but this track rises above the rest for me.

What that song is to me is a mixture of their previous albums, with a pretty large slant towards Crack the Skye. This however doesn't make me think of anything they've already done:

Probably because Brann's vocals (they are so damn good on this song, but it wouldn't sound right having him on most of their tracks)

never saw the hype with this band. certain songs are good but overall they don't have any exceptional albums. im listening to this now and it's decent. the intro to Stargasm is great. Unfortunately he starts singing shortly after.

First thing my wife said when she heard Spectrelight was "that sounds like COC".....I also agree that Dry Bone Valley is a standout - lots of variety on this disc.

And then we shift into overdrive
But you're not here
And your legs and the stars collide
You're on fire

Is it just me, or does Troy REALLY sound like James Hetfield when he sings his parts of the verses on the title track?
