I've been working at putting this cool effect I've been hearing in my current mix and it never seems to come out right, here's an example of what I'm talking about

It sounds like a simple tempo sync with a phaser and then eq'd to taste...I tried simply hitting a string erasing the attack and tail and looping it but it always sounds like crap and I never seem to achieve what I'm looking for...any methods anyone can suggest would be great.
