Hey Everyone,
I'm recording my bands album and while I've been recording for a while now and getting good results I've always taken the easy way out using a POD XT Live for my guitar sound which was fine because it was in my room and I didn't own a tube amp etc etc. I finally did get myself a tube amp and I have a soundproofed room where I can record it. So I finally did and I'm pretty much a novice with the whole process so I uploaded a few sample clips and would be grateful for any feedback the more experienced folk here can give me.

Gear Used.
ESP Guitar with EMG81 pickups tuned to D Standard with .13gauge strings
POD X3 in front of amp using a gate, compressor and boost + eq
Amp is Laney VH100R with a GS412T Cabinet with Vintage Celestian 30s in it.
Microphone Used Sennheiser E609 and SM58 used without cap (acts like a 57 then)
Soundcard used is TC Electronic Konnekt 8 which has IMPACT mic pre-amps on it.

And please excuse the sloppy playing :p

HERE ARE THE NEW UPDATED CLIPS.

Clip3 sounds nice 2 me man... POD really craps out the sound according to me... being a POD user myself i ve started drifting away from it... a tube amp really adds those hairs around those balls.....:headbang:

Well if you really mean the mic was in the CENTER of the cabinet there is no speaker there which explains why the first clip sounds like complete shit.

Clip 2: Sounds phasey. Why don't you get a decent tone with 1 mic before you start with 2.
Clip 3: Sounds better but move the mic closer to the cone. It is muffled and also thin.

^^^ Because I was extremely mind fucked and stressed and had an el retardo moment. [:p]

On the bright side I could make the next big epic fail tm picture with me and my cabinet with the mic bang in the middle where there are no speakers :p

I guess to err is human or something to that extent [:p]

they all sound kinda muffled/wooly as well as loose (unless that what you're going for) imo..
is this only an amp or ts->amp?

This is my guitar going into the POD X3 which has compression, gate, eq and boost. The problem I'm having is on my headphones they sound much better. Also I have two setups, one is the room which i record in which is got only headphones to monitor in and the other is where I have my near fields. On the headphones it sounds kind ok and i bring it up and then it sounds totally different on the near fields.

yea i know.. the pod sounds very different on the outputs.. try and test a tone infront of your monitors or atleast with some iso cans when your searching

Okay got some more updated samples.

Mic closer to the center of the speaker. Put the mic over where the dustcap meets the cone and move it an inch to 3 inches back.
Can't get a good tone like that? Try again. Once you can nail that start experimenting with shit a little more but that's pretty much the closest thing to a tried and tested, damn near perfect mic position.
Then rather than putting the e609 at the edge of the speaker, go fredman style with it, or you could just stop using it all together because it's a fucking horrible mic. Never seen anyone outside of HCAF amp forum that likes that mic, and I'd hardly say they're the most reliable place for teh AE knowledgez.

First clip is a definate improvement, scrap the others
