... is frustrating and hard. ive applied for many houses and really don't have the extra time or money to drive 8 hrs return every few days for housing inspections.

do you guys have any tips or tricks?

I'm from Brisbane and just moved to Sydney. I flew down and sat on the internet all day looking at realestate.com, domain.com, gumtree.com.au and calling people. I found a place on the second day I was down there. The place is nothing special but it was conveniently located and cheap. I was on a very tight schedule and needed to find a place as soon as possible. But if you have time I recommend setting up a profile on easyroommate.com.au and gumtree.com.au because I have had people reply to those ads I posted a couple of weeks after I had found my place. Hope it works out for you

I moved from a city in Michigan to Kentucky a few years ago. It's about an 8 hour drive too. My wife and I ended up renting a place we found over the internet without going there and checking it out. We found an apartment building that allowed residents to rent out a place for only 6 months. Then we bought a house.

We were lucky and everything turned out alright. The neighbor hood was a little sketchy but we could live with it. Plus had both lived in some pretty ghetto places before.
