hello people,

first, to all the fruity dudes round here, yeah I know, Mac is better. But actually, I am not at point where I should get one. I don't have some many project and I still don't have a clear profesionnal perspective anyway.

So I stick with the PC. On the "fatter" projects, Cubase can suck more that 1,5giga of RAM and the computer just can't follow.

I know getting it away from any network can help but I just can't as it is the only computer I own.

I try to get off some CPU load for example by changing the modern Win XP theme back to the 2000 theme. I will also buy a graphic card and turn off the on-board one. The 2 harddrives also help but it is not enough sometimes.

Do you have any other tips to "enlight" WIN XP ?
Some processes that I could delete or disable ?
"Optimization" of parameters, f.e. virtual memory (often a "debate"), application priority if there is so,...

Or I should just get 2 other gigas ram  ?

I am ready to "re-compilate" an install cd of windows XP if I can find enough processes-programs-stuff-hidden-shits-from-Microsoft to erase from the installation cd. With this :

XP Smoker Pro - http://www.xp-smoker.com/

XP Smoker has a few built-in services profiles that you can set with one click of a button and a reboot. It goes from 'bare bones', 'safe mode', 'power user' or 'default'. Some guy named 'Black Viper or something made the Power User one and it's VERY good. Only thing I changed was disabling wireless since I don't have any. I think power user only has 4-5 services running. XP Smoker also has several tweaks it'll do to Windows without you having to go into menus and figure them out.

I also use Advanced System Optimizer - http://www.systweak.com/

ASO is great for lots of Windows tweaks for little silly shit like menu reaction speed, disabling auto-play and numerous other useless things that bog down XP by default.

Between the 2 of them and regularly/automatically running Diskeeper my system runs about as well as the hardware can be expected to.

:erk:

Don't let anyone tell you such blanket statements.

Both Windows stuff and Mac stuff will work. I, personally, am not a fan of Apple, however, I'm sure Mac stuff works fine, and I know Windows does too.

Man, Diskeeper really tweaked up my HDDs. The system is running a lot more fluidly. Can't believe that they got on-the-fly defragging working with such minimal CPU overhead. I'm still waiting to get through my current project before I get a chance to reformat, but when I do, I'll be using xp smoker to clean it all up.
