some dude with a studio is selling his gear because he's getting married on friday. he's letting go his u87 for $1400.

Should I go for it?? i was saving up for a new laptop but, i think this is a good deal. he bought it about 8 years ago on sweetwater. It's very well taking care of though.

It's a bit of a double-edged sword. For some vocalists it's a magic bullet - just slap a HPF on and you're done. Then again, for some vocalists it just doesn't work at all. If the brand and model is put aside for a moment, it's kinda hard to justify the price tag, so it all depends on whether you're set on the idea of having THE mic in your collection :)

For the record, whenever I've recorded somewhere that carries an U87, I've pretty often ended up with SM7B for the vocals...

I'd do it, they are great tools to bring in clientelle. Just ask Tad Donnely ;)

But in all honesty, if it's in good shape you'll likely never see another one in good shape for that kind of price I'd go for it. Plus it'll last much longer than a laptop and make you money

i assume he is selling a U87ai (the newer version), if he bought it new 8 years ago. but anyway i think its a good deal and you should go for it it,

i also have a U87 and its really and awesome mic, it sounds so smooth, i never planned to buy a U87, but i stumbled across a similar opportunity as you have now, and i took the chance and didnt regret it a single minute, since that moment, my AKG C414 became redundant.

@XES
i dont share your opinion in general, but its also a question how you use this mic.. if its for metal.. with screamin and grunting.. a U87 obviously would not be my 1st choice, but the mic really plays well on normal and classical style singing.

cheers

Really Make sure it's in good working order. Check the xlr connector and make sure it's not loose, make sure the pattern switch is good and actually locks on each position....

1400 for a U87 is really low, and IMO would be a giant red flag. However, if it's all good then go for it in a heartbeat, you could get like 2-2500 for that thing.

Probably not very relevant to the thread but interesting to watch nonetheless.

Yeah, get it and then sell and get something else. Have it at the place I work on (it is a 25yo model, dont know which one exactly) and I dont exactly like it, but it is the go-to mic for so so voices. It has an annoying bump on the low mids, kinda tubby, but it is a good mic.

If it works I'd do it. The U87 is one of those mics that doesn't sound particularly amazing solo'd but often mixes well. It's also "legitimizing" gear which has booking value whether we like it or not.

the u87 is one of the best mics of all time. the only mic i prefer over this is the u47 which will go for 6K$.
go grab that one!!

this guy is no scam. he's a friend and all...but he just needs the money. The mic is in excellent working condition. He will include the Shockmount too, it's not the original, because he didn't buy it originally with it. But it's a shockmount, not a big deal. thanks for the link though exoslime
