Actually, the invisibility cloaks are not too far-fetched. As a scientist in the nanomaterials/metamaterials fields, I've seen this technology advancing. Negative refractive indices exist for wavelengths in the millimeter range (microwave frequencies), and a lot of interest exists to get them nearer to terahertz (visible light). The main problem inherent in these types of technologies is that they "bend" light around the object, preventing the object from actually being able to "see" anything. That is a very difficult situation to deal with, but as I said already, we're not near "invisibility" yet, so other problems may supplant this one.
