Just wanted to find out what everyone is using. I currently use a 2009 8 core mac pro, and am thinking it would be a good investment to get a ups. Any tips or advice when shopping for one?

Shop for an online UPS. More expensive, but safer. No real need to buy a really high capacity one, you can deal with smaller battery life by making the UPS hibernate the PC when it reaches critical level.

I was just looking online. Are there any brands you suggest avoiding? Reviews on these seem quite mixed, but I suppose it could be user error too.

One thing to look for: true sinusoide output.

Many UPSes will supply you with alternating current that looks more like square wave which can negatively affect your recording audio quality.

Thanks for the help guys. Is this one on the right track?

haven't been able to find one that stated is was a true sinusoidal output, I have found ones that said pure sine wave and stepped approximation... This shit is confusing as hell..

Yes.
If you were to believe everything written on that Amazon page (including customer reviews), then it would be a good purchase.
I am not really up to date with UPS units, few years ago a true sine wave output would cost way more than just 160 USD.
