Using a disconnected preamp with impulses

I was wondering if it is ok to hook up a preamp to a computer for use with impulses, without connecting it to a power amp and cab or will I need a load of somekind not to ruin the preamp?

I would imagine so long as your preamp isn't powered you should be alright to plug directly in without damaging anything.
I think a majority of the people on this forum use preamps to record guitar directly that I've read about. I use a behringer v-amp pro preamp but alot of what I've seen talked about on here is the pod xt pro preamp.

This is true. It's the power section that's the issue here.

However, you can run a head on standby without a load. Just don't take it off standby...

But some amps won't produce any sound at all on standby.

Especially if it's not hooked up to a cab.

But... you can run out from the effects send and use the head as a preamp without the power amp being on, or you can have the head on to let the tubes warm up without connecting it to anything if you only have one cab in the studio.

i use my peavey fx send and plug right into my soundcard and havent had any problems that way

Maybe Piranha. Haven't used PSA-1 very much with impulses though. Rockmaster has a nice grainy sound but it needs post EQ:ing.
