Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it pretty common to use drumtriggers and a module to control gates when recording toms etc?

Is there some way to do this via midi in Cubase too?
We've just been given an Alesis DM5 moduel complete with DDrum triggers and it would be awesome if we could use that to trigger the gaterelease via the midi out of the module.

Is it possible?

Yes it is possible, within Cubase you have a plug called MidiGate. Insert it on the audio track you want to be gated, and route the MIDI track containing the opening informations to this MidiGate, and you're done, works like a charm.

P.S. : Lucky you, nobody gives me anything... :)

Lucky and lucky, consider it selling my ass to the adult educational association that pays the rent for the house we've got the studio in...
In the end I'll probably end up recording the other bands over here for free...

Midigate you say? Do they have that in Protools M-Powered too?

Ok, so...

1) Add a stereo group track. Put the C1 comp-gate as insert. Set the gate EQ Mode to Sidechain and set the Key Mode to "R -> L". You can use the bandpass filter for example on the EQ to isolate the trigger signal even better. You can still assign this to a mono output even though it's a stereo track.

2) Set the output channel of the signal you want to be gated to the group track and pan it to full left

3) Set the output of the trigger channel to the group track and pan it full right. It's a good idea to offset the trigger signal 10-15ms so that the gate opens right before the actual hit.

4) Adjust the threshold for the gate.

I do all my mixing externally so I just send the group to the a mono output channel. I guess if you mix in the box, you'll have the snare only on left... Maybe you can make one more group track, this time mono, and set the output of the first group track to the second group track. Guess that should work.
