OK, who is watching this? Our friends make their grand return after a 24-year wait. So, your thoughts on the first episode?

Meh... it could go either way. Seems like they're just changing the faces on a couple of the things that happened in the original, but I could be wrong. Interesting that there is already organized resistance in the first episode.

Not sure how they could possibly "go right" with this, for fans of the original anyway--either they change a couple of things around, and it's the same story (how very exciting :Smug:) or they completely re-do things and leave fans going "waitaminnit, that's not right..." Or, they walk that fine line in between and make it interesting, original, and still in keeping with the first series. Then again, really, most of the people watching probably won't have been fans, I'm guessing.

We forgot to set us up the DVR. :(

I was a middlin' fan of the original show....I liked it, but let's face it, it was done on a (relatively) shoestring budget for its time. Curious to see what they do with the concept now.

Not every 'reimagining' is doomed to failure: I was a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica series (yes, it could be very cheesy indeed, but I was, like, 15 at the time :) ) and I resisted the new version for years before finally checking out the BSG DVDs....and I loved the new show.

Oh, me too--I dressed up as Six for Halloween--but I think BSG was, number one an exception, and number 2, only on for one season originally and thus easier to redo.

We shall see. :)

SPOILERS, BTW...

I never watched the original, or the miniseries that came out later, but I liked this pilot for the most part. It has a great cast (nice to see some more Firefly alums getting high-profile parts), and decent dialogue writing... but I agree with Shaye that they could have drawn out the resistance "reveal" for an episode or two. Have some strange deaths/disappearances that coincide with the "arrival", and explain them a little later on.

I thought it was well-done that they, jokingly, addressed the similarity of the "arrival" sequence to the movie Independence Day.

Independence Day had the potential to be an awesome movie, but they seriously ruined it with Will Smith and Bill Pullman, not to mention the guy from the Vacation movies.

As a devoted fan of the original series (I once owned the Visitor Military Uniform), I can say that I was disappointed. I felt the plot was rushed. Granted, they made the series based on modern times, but Anna (Morena Baccarin) I do not find credible as the Leader. In the original mini-series, when John (Richard Herd in his finest role) came out, you thought he was God himself, until he apologized and put on his glasses! But, Anna came off as the uninvited guest, not God herself. But, everything just seemed to have been rammed down our throats instead of the building of the "whys" and "hows". A disappointment to be sure.

Oh, BTW, the series on Sci-Fi was the ORIGINAL series shown on NBC. That will always be the classic.

Agreed on the "rushed" bit. I wonder why they decided to do that... maybe because most viewers already "know" the Visitors are reptilian? Still would've enjoyed a more drawn-out "reveal."

Pictures or it didn't happen, Ms. Helfer! :)

haha, I *wish* I looked like her! Actually, I looked more like a Puerto Rican hooker. But I do have pics I will post on Facebook anyway. Evidence for why Shaye should never lighten her hair at least.

Aha, completely disregarding the existence of Galactica 1980, are we?

Of course. That totally doesn't count. :)

and that whole "You WILL believe that Earthly computers will be able to interface with alien computer systems" thing.

Actually, it's not the plot hole it's made out to be. At the beginning of the movie, the aliens put a signal in our satellites to do a countdown. So they had already made an interface possible, or at least revealed how one could be created. And of course the only guy who could interface the two was the guy who first discovered that the aliens had planted a signal in our satellites.

As for V, I liked it. My only criticism is that they introduced too many plot elements at once. The Visitors never even had a chance to build up any goodwill before the resistance forms and the Fifth Column shows up.

I do like that they are a little more subtle though. I mean, a bunch of aliens come down in red uniforms with swastikas and talk about their Leader, and we're supposed to assume they are friendly? At least this time there are no obvious red flags to anyone who doesn't have inside information.

True...but if you missed that bit of the plot -- which a lot of people did -- it really seemed like a ludicrous ending.

I'd also add that the trend is for more and more cross platform compatibility. Since the aliens were more advanced than us and had conquered other worlds before, chances are they had designed their systems to easily be made compatible.

In Star Trek, aliens usually had little trouble futzing about with the Enterprise's computer systems. I think it's just accepted in science fiction that much like universal translators enable aliens and us to communicate easily, it's assumed that alien computers would be able to easily interface with ours.
