van halen news?

I think VanHalen is played out and could never match or even come close to their best, it would seem like Mohamad Ali leaning on the ropes and thats just not the way to go out.

Matt and I discussed this not too long ago but I think Eddies riffage peaked with OU812 and Unlawful only being a solid album. thats just my opinion. I have no desire to hear them without Sammy and thats not going to happen, even if it did somehow I doubt the magic would be there. I would like to hear something great just the same but have no idea what it would take. Best commercial band of the 80's IMO, but that was ALONG time ago now.

The new music they recorded a few years ago (those downtuned new songs on the best of album) were pretty crap.

I wonder if they have any decent left material in them.

those weren't "new" tunes. "learning to see" was a leftover from the twister soundtrack sessions and "it's about time" and "up for breakfast" are songs from the aborted 2nd cherone album that sammy rewrote the lyrics. van halen has a history of doing that. on 5150 a ton of tunes are leftovers. "good enough" was the music to "yankee rose" when DLR was still in the band and "summer nights" was a tune called "eat thy neighbor" from the DLR pre 5150 sessions and i think "get up" is exactly the same as when DLR was there with a few lyric changes by sammy. "eagles fly" from sammy's solo album was a leftover from 5150 and the 2 new tunes on sammy's unboxed hits album were written with van halen in the 90's

i thought "humans being", "me wise magic" and the VHIII album showed eddie wasn't out of ideas. the riffs may not be as memorable but some of his best guitar work is on the stuff i mentioned. i saw VH on the cherone tour and thats the best eddie has played since 1986 imo. he was on fire. i've seen clips on the tours from 2004 and 2007 and eddie was drunk and just overall bad. hopefully he's turned that around now after rehab.

i may be one of the few who like the VHIII album and wanted a followup to it. they recorded a 2nd album or at least demo's it and i remember my local radio station announcing a new VH album was almost complete and due in summer 2000 (this was in mid 1999) and then a few months later cherone was gone. i think eddie still holds a grudge about this and seems like he wanted cherone in the band still to this day. warner bros. records forced their hand to get cherone out and if you ask eddie he didn't want that. to this day cherone is the only lead singer of VH that eddie will tell you he's friends with and not try to navigate the question with back handed answers that leave you guessing. i believe he's better friends with DLR than hagar but thats not saying much. the problem now is you have a band who the main writer wants a singer who is no longer in the band. he liked the fact cherone had range (unlike roth) and could write lyrics for any style like a party rock tune, a ballad or a more serious tune and he liked the fact he had more energy than hagar

They'd have to get Michael Anthony back. If and when they do they'll get a deal with Wal*Mart and sell their album through them...

they'll just hire someone like jeff scott soto to do the background vocals on a new album

I probably went through the same thing listening to those songs what most do listening to new Queensryche or whatever else: you see the name of the band and go "WTF is this? This doesn't sound like X band used to."

thats probably it. i just listened to van halen 3 again and everytime i listen to it i think its better. if the production was better and cherone sang in his real range and didn't sound like he used a cheap PA system i would say its one of the top 5 van halen albums. well they would also have to drop "from afar" and "how many say i" and shorten a few of the songs but the ideas and songs are there for the album to be great they just needed someone to help tweak the songs and get them to drop the 2 stinkers.

also i thought anthony sings on the 3 new tracks but i know he doesn't play bass. he didn't play bass on VH3 either except a few tunes

THey might better go with DLR and any old bass player then because they will never recapture the magic they had in the mid/late 80's. With Roth the old school die hard Roth VanHalen fans will throw down thier money regardless.

Eddies life was good back then, positive, he might have been partying too much but life was good. I suspect he's fairly depressed which does nothing for inspiration. Maybe its time for him to do something totally new and forget VanHalen as a band. Do a instrumental album covering many styles. He was the main focus of talent, doing the ultimate good time music but that is past, he should turn the page.

i take back my comment about anthony singing on the 3 new tunes from 2004. its eddie and his best bud steve lukather doing the BG vocals

Been round-n-round with this band forever. Eddie was and will always be my musical hero. I loved both eras of VH with a slight preference to the Roth stuff. Liked Cherone and was hoping it would work..but bottom line VH3 was kinda lame. I really liked the latest material with Roth (mentioned earlier)...MWM & CGTSNM. This material, along with thier latest tour, wich was shakey at times but very good at times as well...leaves me hope with the possibility of something new / substantial with Roth. The fact that Eddie recently married his publicist, has seemed to transform / clean-up himself...gives me even more hope of new material. Yet, the story of this band continues..."I'll believe it when I see it"?

As far as the best produced / technical sound of VH...does anyone else agree that BALANCE was thier best? Of course FAIR WARNING was thier best material and Eddie's playing was most astounding!?

I must of missed it but what news? I assume a album.?Only news I heard on the radio was that they were going to tour again with DLR... which if true then I'm there. Only saw them once on the last tour. My best friend must of gone to like ten of their shows during that tour.

Good. Even though I would prefer a new CD before anything...I'd say they can still kinda kick it...

i remember one time van halen said they'd never tour without some new product out there. so if they tour this year thats 2 tours now without something new
