Van Halen...

I guess you have to go beyond just the music....

They played a totally new breed of music when they came out. Eddie did shit on guitar that had never been done before. Think Hendrix of the 80's.

As far as a frontman, DLR was the epitomy of showmanship (i really didnt like him that much (to Flashy)) and Sammy was a different twist to the VH era.

Say what you will, VH was the top o' the shit for a while in the 80's. Their stuff still sends a shiver sown my back when I hear it.

Deathstrike, I saw VH on sixteen different occasions, the first in 1983. Don't let people tell you shit, in the day, VH ROCKED... And the women at the shows, were, IMHO some of the best looking women I have ever seen in my life.

. It's just high quality hard rock that tends to be a bit cheesy at times. .

See that's the thing, you say "cheesy" but really, we say something is "cheesy" when it's a cliche, was done before, was heard before, something that is redundant and expected.... but if you think about it...
Van Halen started that crap, so really: they can't be called "cheesy"
They're to blame for big hair, spandax and dumb riffs!
(although I totally understand what you were saying, and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of VH at all)

To me, "cheesy" means just over the top corny, kitschy maudlin.

Just take some song titles for example: "Feel Your Love Tonight", "Outta Love Again", "Women In Love", "So This Is Love", "Why Can't This Be Love", "Love Walks In", "When It's Love", "Can't Stop Lovin You", "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" ....

But despite this "cheesyness" VH always seemed "real" to me in comparison to their spawns like Poison, Warrant, Winger etc. Those other bands are like a real life parody and the real reason why metal almost died out in the nineties when people were fed up with that fake stuff.
