Video of me playing Fallen by Symphony X!

That's great. Not exactly like on the CD (mainly fills), but I like that you had some of your own things there too. Tricky song to play on drums: I know, I've tried! No big mistakes here, so good job man.

Tricky song to play on...EVERYTHING (tho the keys are pretty repetitive and no accolade, for sure). Very good job on that. very tight.

Thanks guys :D

I've actually been practising it on and off for a couple of years but never took all that seriously until I decided to learn it properly to video it.

Playing along with this song in particular has really given me an appreciation for just how creative the band is.

The next song I do a video of will probably be Blackest Eyes by Porcupine Tree. I'm also planning on doing Kaleidoscope by Joel Hoekstra and Set the World on Fire at some point. Great songs!

Thanks very much :).

Here are the main points about understanding what makes good drumming:
1. First and foremost, it needs to be rock solid, dead on time. Sloppy drumming sounds awful.
2. The drummer must give the other musicians room to breathe.
3. The drummer must be able to play at more than one dynamic (volume) level. A lot can't.
4. Everything the drummer does must be musically suitable. Even in songs like Fallen - the drumming still needs to match what everyone else is doing.

It's all fairly logical stuff, but sometimes it's good to point it out to help others understand a bit better :).
If you want a great example of sloppy drumming, have a look at my Alien Hip Hop video. Now THAT's a difficult song, and unfortunately at that point in time my practise room wasn't sound deadened and I literally was unable to focus on making everything truly solid. At least it sounded good when I played it live :)

Dude.. HOLY SHIT THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very very awesome playing man.. I always have admired Fallen not only because of the crazy riffs but all the things going on with the drums!! You nailed it pretty sweet man. RESPECT!!!

Request:
Eyes of Medusa!!! Wooooooooooooooo

Yeah, I love Medusa's Eyes, but every time I play it it makes me sad because it's so hard to play and get it sounding solid!

I'm doing a lot of independence stuff lately though so maybe I'll add it onto my list of songs to video myself playing.

Thanks for the compliments guys :)

Solid. Refreshing to watch, and you've clearly done your homework.

You look so controlled (which means you know what you're doing), but maybe you could show a little more emotion and movement? Your hats are so low and far away that when you play crossed-over you are going to have a hard time getting your left hand high enough to really whack the snare drum. But nice playing.

Hey Batera,
I actually have the hats low because I'm developing my open-handed playing, but it's not yet at the same standard to my cross handed playing. It's getting close though, which is really good. The only problem is that at the moment I'm practising stuff that requires me to be leading with my right hand on the x-hats as I'm doing alternating patterns between my right hand and left foot on the hats.

But I do play along to easier stuff leading left handed. I gave Fallen a couple of goes but the verse parts where it goes a bit trickier are too fast for me at the moment.
