Hey all. So Ive done my research and im fairly comfortable knowing what I want.

Now here is the variable. At home I have a DMP3 preamp, and I just bought an Emu Tracker Pre 2.0 for mobile recording. Both are nothing high end by any means, but not crap..

Anyhow, until now I have used my Studio Projects C1 condensor for vocals. I wanted to get an SM7b or Re20 to track vocals. HOWEVER, I have been told that the SM7b will not like my pre-amps as it is gain hungry, as is the RE20.

The E-mu is rated at 60db, and the DMP3 at 66db gain.

So, im assumign that would leave me with a poor signal (and likely noise from the gain MAX'd)

The mobile recording is something I cant really upgrade, there arent many pre's that will work that are USB powered.

The reason I dont want to use my C1 is that I have heard it is fairly easy to damage a condensor if they are bounced around too much. Any thoughts on that?! It appears a dynamic mic needs a quality preamp to sound good, but do I have any other options since the RE20 and SM7b both want lots of gain, that I cant really supply with my current pre's?!?

Any thoughts? Thx for any help/advice

I got the SM7b and i use it with my RME Fireface 400 mic pres (got max 65 db gain) and never turned above 50 and i got good signal without using compressors so i think it will be ok with your pres. On mobile recording i recomend the SM7b becouse it is a dynamic mic and you got less problem with the enwiroment reflections etc. , and it is biult like a tank :P.

certainly understandable....

Im gonna try out a few things. Ive read a lot of people comparing the SM57/58 to the SM7b, and while I know there is a difference, it might not be too bad for my humble recordings. It deft would be easy to haul around in my laptop bag for uses in a pinch!
