Vocal mic

So contemplating getting a better one because mine sucks. I have a MXL 909 and it's quite possibly the shittiest mic ever .

So what would you recomend in the 200 to 500 usd range?

BTW this is for singing not screaming so looking for something that is good for this kind of shit.

While I agree that the 57 is not the way to go for vocals when recording, it is very usefull and reliable live.

However for guitar micing live 57 all the way.

Out of all the studio projects mics, I get the impression the cheapest one (B1) is the most highky regarded. I'm certainly happy with mine

Unless you're a really good engineer and/or have a really nice mic pre, stay away from the SM7.

There are mods out there for the MXL's that are supposed to be very good.

The sm57 and sm58 are the exact same microphone just the 58 has the pop filter

Ill second that. I have both and love em. I used the 5600 recently on a female vocalist and the SM7 on a big gruf guy singer who wanted a mic he could hold.

Don't trust what they say in the manuals, it's marketing. I did some analysis of shure mics a while back, it's kinda like they make it up. The presence boost may well be something acoustic happening over the pop screen, but they are the exact same capsule. So any difference in the output is post capture and you should be able to replicate it yourself with EQ.
