I've tried playing around with Reaper's vocoder a bit but never really managed to get anything cool out of it... Anyone have any experience using vocoders? It would be cool if someone could post clips of a vocoded track, the key signal and the unaffected vocal signal separately so I can hear what sort of sounds I should be using to combine in the first place... I have no idea what type of synth sounds people are usually feeding their vocoder with... Are there any good free electronic-y synth VSTi's that would be good for just generating like square and saw waves and shit?

I had a play with Nuendo's stock vocoder on some vocals the other day, wasn't digging it though, I was having trouble getting any sounds I was really liking.

FL Studio has a decent vocoder. Very simple to use too. Route the carrier and the modulation signal to whatever track the vocoders on, build your melody with the piano roll on the modulation track and away you go.

When the mood strikes me, I use Nord Modular :)

Usually with vocoders, the more frequency bands it has, the more intelligible the result. Although, there's a certain old-school charm in low band vocoders..

Forbidden - Cool to see another Reaper user here.

TAL has a cool (and free) vocoder out. If you go to KVR you should be able to find it pretty easily. If you have any troubles getting it to work, pop into the Reaper forums and someone will definitely help you out.
