Volt - Rorhat
Exile on Mainstream Records - EOM023 - February 2nd, 2007
By Brandon Strader
Volt, a new noise rock band out of Chemnitz, Germany, have released their experimental and free-spirited full-length debut, Rorhat. They waste no time pulling out the grunge tone and laying waste to chirpy, quickly struck notes and full-on grunge mayhem.
In the song Frommbug, the band uses many high notes with delay against a solid, rhythmic background while vocalist 'Andre' does a very funny Crazy Frog immitation. Stativ is an interesting song with its sneaky vibes and witch doctor vocals. Each song tends to drag on with a general riff formation that drones on and on in an almost hypnotic manner.
Rorhat is a great example of what can be accomplished if you set your mind to it. These guys were originally a pop boyband before they began writing noise rock. In that sense, it is an impressive debut especially considering their prior experience. For an album that is intended to be noisy and harsh, Rorhat succeeds - yet it could have been much better with a stronger production and more diversity in the songwriting. Plenty of noise - not enough ROCK!
