We all knew she was shit, but does this prove it?

Oh baby.. this could be TOXIC!

As Britney Spears returned to the studio to record her new single this week, we were pointed towards an excruciating video on YouTube of the singer performing live with what the producers say is the actual vocal feed straight from her microphone.

The footage - filmed in Las Vegas for HBO - apparently reveals how Brit really sounds when she struts through those energetic dance routines.

If its real, this is seriously bad. Its seriously bad anyway, but if it is really her, this is scandalous.

I now present, the Naked Voice of Britney Spears

Yeah i've seen that vid and i think i could sing better. And the bad thing is some fans will see this vid and think it was fabricated to make her look bad.

More proof that Auto Tune and other computer related music production devices are fucking evil, absolute fucking evil, if it wasn't for Pro Tools, Britney would of never been a star

Autotune is a funny one. Most people that don't understand it assume that it can polish a turd, but it isn't really that simple. You need to be able to hold a solid tune (and hence be able to sing) for it to be able to work its magic, and places where you can really hear it in music, is 99% of the time intentional, and used for effect.

I have no doubt she was once a somewhat capable singer in the studio (and probably still is when it comes down to it), but the fact that she spends most of her time mouthing away being unheard and concentrating more on what the rest of her body is doing before concentrating on her voice, means that what is coming out while she is "performing" is going to sound shit. This was never meant to be heard, so she is putting more effort into making it look the part rather than sound the part. I also understand that she does sing one or a couple of songs live during her concerts, and sound fine while doing so.

Given that it wasnt meant to be heard, Im still amazed that it sounds the way it does

IF she was able to sing well in the studio, you would think she would be able to find a similar sound with some vocal warm ups for the show. Weather or not is is meant for human consumption is beside the point in my opinion. If she was professional enough to produce the show in the first place, she should be professional enough to make sure her voice sounds the best that it can.

Either that, or she is lip sinking and ripping the fans off. Alternatively, she cannot sing and ripping her fans a new one!

most of us, one would think, would have a certain amount of professionalism in our day to day working lives

If we took the atitude that "it looks great, that will do" most of us would loose our jobs.

While lip syncing, making it look good is more important than making it sound good. I am not saying I agree with lip syncing at all, but if it is going to be done, then logic suggests that she concentrates more on selling the look than making sure the vocal that no one hears will sound decent. There is no if she can sing in the studio...we have all heard here songs on the radio etc... she can sing well enough when it counts (when it counts being in the record execs minds of course), and as I said, she is known to sing one or a few songs live at her concerts. The reason she doesn't produce a similar sound while dancing etc is because her concentration is elsewhere. Lip syncing is usually attempted to be justified by the fact that pop artists "can't dance and put on a show the way they do and sing at the same time, so they lip sync to give the whole performace package"...or some shit. I know this is a load of crap, because any real performer like Pink for example, CAN do it, and really most people going to the shows would rather hear her actually sing than dance, but meh, that is how they will try and justify it to you. I guess on the other hand, Michael Jackson was known to lip sync for performance purposes, and if anyone claims he couldn't sing then they are out of their fucking minds.

The fact it was never meant to be heard does make a difference. It is like saying an artists sketches and concept work needs to be of the same standard as their finished product, just in case someone sees it. Bollocks.

On topic of sounding good or bad when people shouldn't be listening...there was a video on youtube a few months ago or maybe longer of Beyonce warming up before a performance where she sounded terrible...pitchy, off key and just all round bad, but as I said with MJ, anyone who claims she can't sing is a fucking idiot. This video doesn't mean she is crap and has somehow covered it up until now, it was just never meant to be seen. This is the problem with the internet exploiting things that aren't meant to be seen or heard.

what blitzy said.
most likely because she's miming her mic isn't through the foldbacks, so she can't hear what she's singing and has no chance of being on pitch. We'd all cut one of our fave singers some slack if they were off key due to bad monitors or whatever.

that being said. Lip syncing is a joke and the idea that so many people will spend lots of money and get excited about going to see someone NOT sing their own songs and just dance around a bit instead baffles me and just proves what fucking uncultured morons most people are.

Yeah, +1 to everything Blitzy said. This sounds like someone being a cunt and recording the output of the mic when it should definitely have been muted (and likely was through the PA). Whenever we do video clips and we lipsync to the backing track, we tend to sing along in a way where it LOOKS LIKE we're singing but don't pay a real lot of attention to actually being in key or good technique or whatever, so I'd say that's what we're hearing here.

That said, like Dave said, fuck lipsync'ing live unless you're forced to do it on TV. If you do that at a concert and try to sell it as a live performance, you're ripping people off big time, including yourself.

I'm not convinced it's legit. I've seen a few of these things floating around recently. I wonder if it's not just someone having fun like those "some band shreds" videos going around.

and really most people going to the shows would rather hear her actually sing than dance
Not that I'm by any means blessed with a large number of "Britney fans" for friends, and I admittedly wasn't looking into it in any depth, but a lot of the online discussion and TV interview snippets I saw when the whole lip syncing 'controversy' was at its peak suggested most people really didn't give a shit about whether she actually sang live or not, and that it was all about the show for them.

If you are the kind of person who gets excited about seeing Britney Spears live, surely musical integrity isn't something you factor into your ticket purchasing decisions.
