In what respect? Dutch is remarkably similar to English (or vice versa), and so what exactly prevents a good translation?

They're similar, but Dutch really doesn't lend itself to suspenseful storytelling, especially due to the fact that in Dutch, the difference between speaking language and writing language is quite large (especially since books are always written in Dutch-Dutch, so for Flemish people, it's even worse). Plus, Dutch reads pretty dorky and kills the atmosphere.

Yeah, especially when your native language is Flemish - then written Dutch reads as posh, prissy and unconvincing.

His best book by far, the only person capable of translating it to film is....Guillermo Del Toro

I've always loved Books of Blood, some really great stories in those.

Haven't read this. I just checked out a synopsis of it and I gotta admit... Doesn't sound that great to me But obviously I can't judge it yet.
