Generaly, most of the 900 series suck. Bad.

But the SL-X is a different story. It's all tube, no diode clipping as in the other 900s. Doing a tiny mod to allow for 6L6's does wonders to it, and there are a few other mods that make it scream.

well, I don't know if I can sell it now. This deserves further delving into.

Well, Im sorry about not selling it, but thanks for the indirect heads up. Anywhere I can learn about some of these mods...? Something has been wrong with it though for a while. It doesn't put out any sound whatsoever. I have had it in the shop probably about 4 times and it constantly messes up. Not the same problems, different ones, but it isn't reliable at all.

I got the amp from my uncle who now uses an ibanez tone blaster and a digitech rp pedal for his tones... I mean, its whatever lol. But like I said, I got it from him and it was fucked from the beginning. I got it and took it in the first time because it wasn't sounding right, they looked at the fuse and instead of buying a fuse, he stuffed tin foil in there.... So yah. I don't know what's wrong with it but like I said, it has constantly had problems.

The reason I never liked it was because it never had enough "gain"for me. It was my first tube amp and I was looking for a 5150 sound and not a british marshall sound. But I def need to revisit it again if its really the case.

Well the foil in there tells me lots of stuff is messed up.

And with both preamp gain knobs turned up, it should sound like this-

Roland Cube 60 and Axe FX.

Amps that I've owned before were Engl Fireball, Engl Savage, Crate Blackheart, Peavey Bandit, & a no name transistor halfstack with Metal Muff, Zombie and Digitech grunge pedals and a no name transistor combo with Ibanez Thrash Metal pedal.

All of them sounded actually pretty cool in their own way. I was surprised by the cheap solutions and a bit disappointed of the Engl amps, because they are sounding poor, if you're not using the right cabinet.

My experience is: You don't need to spend a lot of money for a good tone, but getting a great one is not only expensive - it's a lifelong journey ;)

Engl powerball
Vox VTXL 30
Peavey vypyr 30

Had marshall tsl602, sold because it was muddy and woolly, and engl screamer, sold because of the powerball.

Ever got any good tones off that thing? Using a TS?

To be honest I always thought it had a really weird midrange, always found myself dialling the mids lower and lower and lower until it just became a unclear scoopy mess. I did try it out with a TS but I actually preffered the sound of the amp without it.
