What are the 'big guys' working on right now?

Maybe Madsen mixes sound great on consumer systems, like the Behringers? Honestly you don't want to be hearing them here...

But yeah, anybody know what CLA, Ben Grosse, Randy Staub, Bergstrand etc. are up to?

Versus has sounded pretty good IMHO with Genelec 8050's and Dynaudio BM15's in properly designed control rooms. Not exactly consumer systems or rooms. Maybe it's just a matter of taste, then.

EDIT: Sorry, mixed up The Dead Eye and Revolver, which isn't a Madsen mix. Not a fan of The Dead Eye at all, sonically or songwise.

well, according to CLA's youtube channel, I guess he is doing something with Stone Temple Pilots. edit: yup

And didn't Scarpoint (Ola & co) record with Bergstrand lately?

This was the only thing I found from Ben Grosse. Also he mixed a single for 12 Stones, which was a minor hit when Evanescence came out because their singer was featuring in the "Going Under" megahit.

Randy Staub did the latest Stone Sour album

Not metal, but I know a lot of you appreciate Bendeth and company's work, so here is the deal:

They just wrapped up recording, producing, mixing the Crystal Bowersox record (second place from American Idol) and let me tell you...it sounds fucking phenomenal. Not only is she a fantastic singer, but there are a ton of world class musicians on this one.

Production is tits. I've been hearing it for the past couple months and really can't wait for it to be released. Mid-December from what I remember.

Any classic rock fans will dig it. ;)

tue madsen is hit or miss for me.
i liked the haunted - the dead eye, has a nice dynamic range (partly due to the songs), but i'm not a fan of versus.
liking the new hatesphere, but i totally understand ermz' opinion right there...to the nines sounds nasty (in a bad way) on a good system, but rocks my socks out on consumer speakers.
new neaera is sooo not my cup of tea, but i liked what he did with dark tranquillity - fiction. nice ambience work, but way too fucking loud kick.

Madsen's mix on Versus is a tough one for me... It doesn't sound as clean, polished and, well, hifi as most other big metal bands releasing stuff at the moment. But it's got such fantastic vibe, you can really feel the band. I realize that this is a very diffuse way of stating it, but I dig his work with The Haunted.

Definitely. I love Mnemic's Sons of the System's production for the same reason. It's raw and refreshing.

^ I still don't dig how the OH's are pumping on that one though, which is my main gripe with Madsen's mixes. Really distracting IMO.

yeah, he's using a LOT of compression, especially on the drum bus.
actually, he said in an interview that he doesn't compress kick/snare etc that much, but relies on the drum bus compression to get the smack.
kataklysm - in the arms of devastation is another prime example of that compressed as fuck sound....you really can hear the drum bus compressor work during the double kick/cymbal stuff. add some 2bus compression, and shit will be pumping hard.
probably one of the reasons why his mixes tend to jump out of the speakers on consumer level systems. not exactly audiophile, but effective i guess.

and seriously we are talking about heavy music.
I think it is somehow missleading to talk about audiophile with bands like Hatesphere :D
This shit should kick you hard and shouldnt plesent your ears

You're one of the luckiest guys on this forum for sure being able to work with a guy like Bendeth.

That mix is definitely quite huge and cool. I wish I could hear it without myspace compression... oh well soon enough.

Do you know of any big hard rock stuff that Bendeth is going to be doing in the near future? He's still holding the best drum sound in the industry title for me, and he chooses to actually do things differently than most engineers (like using Alnico speakers for modern, distorted tones and making them work).

On another note, I like a lot of Madsen's work.

I'm not nearly as large of a fan of Grosse's stuff as some of you guys, though.

Cheers man...House of Loud crew are solid peeps and the stuff coming out recently has sounded tits! I'm simply an intern though, so soaking up what I see and asking questions from time to time is the goal! I unfortunately do not have inside info for upcoming projects.
