What do most heavy metal bands tune to?

Totally depends on the band. I've heard E, E flat, D, C sharp, B, and A.

Depends on the effect you want, and how it 'feels'. As far as I can tell, there is no standard.

Except for my sorry ass who tunes my B string to G.(play 5 string Bass)
