Hey all.
Im wanna buy a few decent tom mics. At the moment in only using 57's, and i dont like them.

Im curious what other people use. Toms seem to be a part of the kit that not many people spend a lot of time on, and once they have found something decent, they arent really too wiling to try something else

I know old MD421's are the best thing ever on them, but i cant really afford $400AUD for just one. Ive had a look at Audix D4's but cant find too many reviews on them.

What do other poeple use on toms?!

sm57 for toms is ok - if you can't get a decent result with these mics, there might be another issue with tuning or placement.

heil pr30 seems to be the new winner for a lot of people, i haven't tried them, but looking for a pair in the near future.

Loves me some e604's. Audix's D4/D2 combo is awesome as well. Never have been a fan of 421's...but obviously some guys can get killer tom tracks with them.

421's are well worth the money IMO. ...You just have to learn how to tune drums in order for them to be effective. :heh:

(That last bit was a joke, 006, just in case you were gettiing offended.) Seriously, though.... I just put the mics fairly far back & use gentle EQ & compression. That's all. If the drum is well tuned & well played, it'll sound immaculate with a 421. I consider my set to be one of my best investments.

421's are my first choice. Sometimes placement and bleed can be a PITA with them tho. Pretty much everything mentioned in this thread (e604, d2, 57, etc.) are very usable.

how about those Opus 87's? are they serious candidates to discuss or are they less prefered or "blown away" by 421/audix/57/604's?

I agree with pretty much all of the above... but also check out AKG C3000s... Generally a piece of crap mic, but if you want snappy toms with a good amount of attack... give em a shot, personally I LOVE them for toms only... and you can snag them pretty damn cheap

I was able to get some awesome tom sounds with 57's and a Sennheiser e609. I firmly believe it's all in the tuning. If it's tuned and setup right, all you have to do is stick something there and you should be able to have a workable sound.

True words in my book. I just happen to prefer smaller mics like the 604s if they do the trick. Why? Less space for the skinsmen to hit the mics.

Defineately CAD M179 or sometimes SM98 (original, not newer version). Everyone should own a few CAD M179 for the price and versatility in my humble opinion.
