what is it with death metal bands calling themselves grindcore?

i dont get it. bands like cephalic carnage, the red cord, agrophobic nosebleed, cryptopsy. i was surfin the grindcore page on www.mp3.com and i saw all those bands listed on there.

also the "deathgrind" genre/title is often conflated with just "grind"

I can see Cryptopsy and The Red Cord as definately mislabelled. Cephalic Carnage is in a grey area, it could be either or. But Agoraphobic Nosebleed not grind? They're definately in the right spot.

Well grindcore and death metal sounds similar so most people can mislabel them (I did it too).

then whats the difference between grindcore and death metal? i know all things "core" have breakdowns. but ive heard death metal thas has breakdowns too.

Cephalic has element of Grind in the music, and also elements of death. I'm pretty sure the band goes by that too but I might be wrong.

grindcore - It sounds like Heavy Metal but it came out of hardcore punk but taking it more extreme. They have traits like fast, simple guitar riffs with a lot of riff changes and low growl vocals and they usually don't use solos. Napalm Death started the genre.

death metal - Grew out of thrash metal but took it to an extreme. Guitar solos are usually used. Vocals vary but usually gutteral and low. Bands like Death and The Possesed started it.
