What is this guitar technique?

I've just recently heard about it and want to know how to do it. It's called a "volume swell" Maybe I'm just stupid and it's something really simple? Plus, is there any other techniques I should know of? Here is a bunch I already know:

- Sweep Picking (along with alternate picking)
- Pinch Harmonics
- Natural Harmonics
- Palm Muting
- Sliding
- Vibrato
- Finger picking (acoustic)
- Chords (duh)

I know how to use a tremolo but I know there is more to it then lowering the notes. Thanks for the help!

If you have volume pedal, you just pick the note and raise volume, but if you don't have it, hammer on the note and use the guitar's volume knob to do it. BTW, you should cut the volume after the note has ringed for awhile, you decide how long it's been heard. BTW, It sounds cooler if you have reverb or delay on.

It can be hard to pull this tecnique off properly depending on where your volume knob is situated. It is usually done with a volume pedal though as Progbass pointed out...

My guitar teacher always uses his Strat to do it with the volume knob, because Fender always puts their volume knobs retartedly close to the strings. He manages to sweep pick it and turn the volume knob up with his pinkie finger, like he's closing his hand.

Hooray thanks for the replies I didn't think the technique was so simple! My guitar is a normal strat and the knobs are relatively close to the strings.

You wouldn't believe. He's got all the skill of any guitarrist you can possibly name, except for the top 10, but he refuses to use his skill, because he hates metal.
And when I ask him to teach me the basics to these techniques, he always says that it takes no skill. He hates me because I listen to Prog Metal. (Not really hates me, but gets pissed off, because I listen to Prog Metal.)

you also missed the beatuiful technique of legatto
also, sweep tapping (which could be taping at the final note of a swept arpeggio, or using 2 hand tapping), which is maybe not a technique per se, but more a combination of techniques.
speaking of combinations, theres something thats sort of like a combination of alternate picking, sweep picking and leggato, i think its called hybrid picking, and once you can use it, its kick ass.

It depends on who you or I am reffering to when I say "God". If I mean MJR, then most likely. If I mean God God, then you bet your sweet ass God can 2 hand tap. If I mean me, then no.

I like the hybrid picking idea, and I forgot to mention 2 hand tapping. Yes, I am quite good at 2 hand tapping. what in the hell is legato? That's the big one I think I should know.

yea, its sort of like economy picking, but even more 'liquid' and fluid. i magine using economy picking with legatto, something like that.

I use Hybrid picking for alot of cool clean stuff, like the clean part in DWoT, when the lyrics that aren't the intro come in. It's one of my favorite techniques.

As a guitar technique, think of it as tieing together a series of consecutive notes without using the pick and in a way that no break is evident between those notes. You accomplish this by using hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and even tapping. A legato example in the A minor pentatonic scale could be:

A|---7h10t12---------|
E|---5h8/10----------|

(Only the first notes should be picked.)

Thats pretty shitty of your teacher. The role of a teacher is to encourage their students and teach them what they want to learn. How old is this guy?
