The HOLY CROSS album smokes! I did a CD showcase several weeks back on my show. Exactly how I like my heavier side of Metal. Killer production, and mid ranged/agressive vocals without having to go into the growl/death style that I hate.

Right now the albums that are totally kicking my ass are

W.E.T. - Wet (Featuring Jeff Scott Soto)

Pumped - Sonic Extasy (What a monstrous ballsy Hard Rock album! Has the Brainstorm singer pre Andy Frank)

Thunderstone - Dirt Metal (Although Rick Altzi is all over the place now this is by far his best work since the band "Frequency")

Dreamland - Exit 49 (Amazing 3rd album. Wish they could be a part of PPUSA. Killer Power Metal, and Jakes vocals rule).

Redemption - Snowfall On Judgment Day (NVD has outdone himself. Nuff said)

Mob Rules - Radical Peace (Another awesome band that needs to come to PPUSA. Both the E.P. and Full Length album smoke!!)

Last Temptation - Better Late Than Never (Features Frank Vestry from Marcello/Vestry. Needs to be in every 80's/90's Hard Rock fans collection)

Theres more but thats what is in constant rotation right now for me.

The biggest disappointment of the year? Brainstorm - Memorial Roots. Holy shit did they steal Lars Ulrich snare drum from the St Anger album? Who the hell mixed and produced this? It sounds like shit, and I can't make it through 1 fucking song. What a shame.

The Status Minor was decent but really didnt grab me. I am not sure what it is. Perhaps another spin soon.

Also MASTEDON is back (The Christian AOR/Hard Rock band). So far the new album sounds like the band "Boston" but lighter. Its pretty damn good but I was really hoping for something a little more ballsy. Oh well the harmonies are great (wouldnt expect anything less from Elefante).

In addition to all the new released from the well known bands, I've been listening to:

The Eternal - Kartika: Australian Progressive / Gothic metal. Some Pink Floyd / Anathema / Dream Theater influences. "Blood" is my favorite song on the album (kinda reminds me of Dream Theater - "Home").

P.S. The first two albums Glenn listed are definitely killer! The frontwoman in Whyzdom reminds me of the guy in Amorphis when she headbangs. :D

I'm friends with Mark from The Eternal, was in Virgin Black as a touring member when I TMed for them on their US tour with T/D/F. Good guy, good band too.

WHAT?!? Really?!? Say it ain't so!!!! I assumed they had Sascha Paeth back at the helm after "Downburst"! This will be a MAJOR bummer if this is true.....

I have not been able to get the Shadowland box set out of my car. I can't believe I completely missed out on these guys back in the day. I've been a fan of Pendragon and Arena forever, so this is a natural. (For those not familiar: traditional British neo-prog, but brilliantly done. Features Clive Nolan of Arena/Pendragon and Karl Groom of Threshold.)

NW: 'Hawks / Panthers NHL hockey

Hey Glenn...

How much time would you say you spend listening to new music, as a component of promoting the festival and keeping a finger on the pulse of what's coming up in the scene, and how much time spent just listening to what you would listen to if PP never existed?

The Devin Townsend Project- Ki

Absolutely LOVE this album. So starkly different from Devin's usual fare, and yet brilliant. Much like when Opeth did the 70's style prog album. I love when an artist steps this far outside their usual comfort zone and produces something as phenominal as this. Kind of the OPPOSITE of what Timo Tolkki keeps doing.
