ok, so I've been hearing alot of buzz about Tube screamers being used in front of amps for recording.

I've never had a TS..... but I've heard some clips and it does sound good.

But I've never heard an "actual" A/B comparison.

Just wondering if I should get one ? Would it sound good on an HD147 ?

And which one to get ?

t808 goes for like $250+
ts9 + mod for $140+
ts9dx $?
ts5 + mod $75
ts10 $150

i just don't know about all this TS business !:hypno: :hypno: :hypno:

keep in mind that one of the primary functions for the tube-screamer is overdriving your preamp tubes [hence the name].

of course it'll have the same basic effect on SS gear [overdriving your gain stage], but you may or may not notice the same kind of tone variation as tossing it in front of a tube rig.

but then I've never tried it...

Grab the Maxon OD-820 or a modded TS-9, both will sound great through a HD147. I used an old TS-9 in front of my POD XTLive for a session recently and it was just a million times better than the emulation I have in the POD.

Wonder how well a Maxon OD808 or 820 would overdrive my ol' ADA MP-1? Can't wait to try it out. Although the guy at my local guitar shop says to either go for the Maxon OD 808 or Fullertone Full Drive 2. GO CAVE!

I have an Ibanez TS-9 and a Maxon OD808 and i love them but i also recently got turned onto the VOX Brit Booster a few months back and it has a tube built right into the pedal and it sounded amazing.

I've got an mp1 that used to be modded for the original mesa mod, which lacked gain severely. if I'd only known about the tube screamer at that point, I might have gotten some crushing sound out of that thing. ah well.. now I have a real mesa..heheh.. modded mp1s are fun though, I still have a Mod 4 MKII..

a bit more fun to mod than to play through though, shame..

I've had an MP-1 a few years ago and enjoyed playing thru it. Yeah, even a standard MP-1 doesn't have monster gain, but I really don't want monster gain (guess thats why I got another agian). Thought those mods do sound interesting.

they're fun man. mainly because you get to take an active part in the "search for tone". that part being breaking open your preamp and actually converting the circuitry by soldering in new resistors and caps. I really enjoyed all that for what it was, just part of "the search".

The Maxon OD808 is a great pedal, but my personal favorite is the Fulltone Fulldrive 2. Fatness for days, with true bypass. I used to have the original Red Fulldrive, got offered a pretty penny to sell it, and instead bought the newer Blue one. Still absolutely breathtaking, but the Red was the finest pedal I've ever seen, heard, or played through.

is Boss sd-1 also a good option to crank a tube head? or we should stick to the options mentioned here allready?

Ok guys....

I just bought a Maxon 808 pedal........this is my last ditch effort to make my HD147 sound kick ass.

If not......it will be time to rob a bank and purchase either a Framus, Bogner, or ENGL.

Choices ol' Choices ! :yell: :yell: :yell:
