whats the reason behind micing toms like this?

I would imagine if anyone ever attempted to mic like that it would be because they are trying to isolate the sound and avoid bleading.

But I read you generally want to aim the mic toward the center of the drum head. Kinda makes it difficult to do that unless its hanging down directly over it which would be right in the drummers way.

I have never seen this before and thats not how they teach it to be setup.

Lol Metaltastic, you and ahjteam have a similar avatar. So for a second, I thought your were quoting yourself and commenting/replying to your own post,

Looks like a mic to me, but I can't tell which one it could possibly be. Maybe SM7, but I thought the grill was black underneath the windscreen...

Well the SM7 is round under the windscreen (and black, not silver), whereas that one is rectangular, which is why I didn't notice it before. Maybe an MD441?

jesterroot: When you say "empty pack of fags, 10 or 20", what do you mean by 10 or 20? Every pack of cigs I've ever bought has had 20, so I'm just trying to clarify what you mean.

oh, well i dunno about u, but in the UK we can buy our rags in packs of 10 or 20, some places even do them in 14 haha but there soon changing the law so that 10 packs cant be baught, the advantige is that the pack is half the size, so its lighter on the snare:)

Ahh, thanks for clarifying. Never knew that about cigarettes in UK. Yeah, it's traditionally 20 over here, for as long as I can remember. A year or three ago Marlboro started making a 25-pack of their regular squares. Kind of a fad. A fag fad! HAR! LOLZSQUID!
