I was browsing some new pics of King's X in the studio. and the drums have a speaker attached to the front head of the kick. I know a speaker can function as a crude mic, but what do you do with that signal?

yeah thats one of michael's little tricks, using it as a mic

Yamaha now makes a retail version of that same concept called the "sub-kick"

I used a Yamaha NS-10 speaker wired to function as a microphone on a kick drum a year or two ago. It worked great in combination with a mic inside the drum.

What is the most insane recording mechanism you guys have heard of? I think it's pretty wild to hear about people recording with Bass cabs as microphones.

Not very weird but I worked live with a well-known 'Madchester' band a couple of years ago and they used SM58's for everything.

The weirdest was a guy who used two bass strings soldered as a mono jack cable, it worked but was definately weird!!

It does sound strange, i wonder what the definition is like. I didn't see any other mic there.
