What's your favourite Neurosis album and why?

The first two albums are a bit too raw for me. The first one is pretty much straight punk.

Souls At Zero is extremely epic, eclectic, and engaging, but lacks cohesion. Enemy Of The Sun is comprised largely of leftovers from that era.

Through Silver In Blood is probably their most epic. I think it's where they hit their peak.

After that I start to get bored with their stuff. Times Of Grace is waaaaay better with the Tribes Of Neurot "Grace" accompaniment.

A Sun that Never Sets is definitely my favorite Neurosis album, and also one of my favorite albums in general. I've actually been debating with my friend over which is better (along with Eye of Every Storm). Out of their older material, Souls at Zero and Through Silver in Blood are equal, and Enemy of the Sun is decent. I find Grace and Given to the Rising just "decent" as well. The first I don't like and the second only has a few good tracks. The album they did with Jarboe is okay I guess. I decided to rate all of their albums because they used to be my favorite band (not anymore but they're still up there).

Anyway, I guess I like StNS best because of it's light atmosphere compared to their others and it doesn't have that "adding a random pointless riff at the end of every song" climax that nearly every song on EoES has, which I would have chosen otherwise if it weren't for that.

Thanks for the great post Tubbs.

What's your take on Enemy of the Sun? Just read some interesting reviews on it. It is one of the few (along with their debut) Neurosis discs I haven't heard.

Well, it's similar to Souls at Zero although it seems to have more tribal influences. Cleanse is a fantastic track if you're into that sort of thing. It doesn't seem to have as many memorable tracks as Souls at Zero did although "Lost" is decent.

Funnily enough 'A Sun That Never Sets' (the song) just came up on shuffle. SPOOKY :erk:

I actually really like Enemy Of The Sun. 'Lost' and 'Raze The Stray' are both immense tracks, and then of course there is 'Cleanse', and the album overall is just as bleak and forboding as Through Silver In Blood which tends to get all the kudos. Souls Of Zero I also really like - only thing it is lacking is that suffocating production that Neurosis perfected with Billy Anderson on Enemy... and Through Silver....

I do like A Sun That Never Sets and, especially, The Eye Of Every Storm from their later material. ...Storm was just as menacing as any of their past records, but in a completely different way. I was actually disappointed that they returned to a more older vibe on Given To The Rising. Despite it being good, I wouldn't minded them branching out further into the ...Storm style.

Through silver in blood is one of my favorite albums ever. Times of Grace is really good too.
The only Neurosis albums I don't like so much are Pain of Mind and The Eye of Every Storm.
