When an album finally "clicks"

Good topic

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours (that album outright rules)

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Agalloch - Pale Folklore (I think this is the best example of mood playing a role in musical tastes. I always thought it was a bit long winded, slow and 'artsy'. I one night with a surreal sort of mindset, not really focused on anything and this album just clicked. I've thought it was brilliant since.)

Decaptiated - Nihility

Deathspell Omega - SMRC

Interestingly enough Bathory clicked with me pretty quickly. I dont know how everyone else was, but for some reason it just didn't seem obscurely unlistenable at first spin.

Demilich and Burzum are the ones that I presume click more, but I think are the most overrated.

This is why it is always a good idea to comb through the used section in a CD store as I have found Gorguts' Obscura and Primordial's Spirit the Earth Aflame there.

Two albums that I had read way too many positive reviews to pass up. They didn't really click the first time through, but once I clear my thoughts (usually after a few tall ones:kickass: ) it hit me like a wave of adrenaline. You suddenly hear every emotion that these artists have poured into creating these songs for our little amusement.

This has also been true for Devin Townsend's albums, especially Ocean Machine.

Yes! A few drinks or a joint can make an album go that extra mile. Drudkh is a perfect example of that.

good thread, Nick.

The mood I'm in, the music I actually would like to listen to at that moment, the current environment, production, and unfamiliar elements within the music. These are essential on the first listen of any cd and certainly the first listen of any band.

If I'm in a shitty mood, I won't be wanting to experiment with hearing new material haha. If a friend says, yo check out this really good heavy rock band, and I'm in the mood for death metal...that's not gonna be good. And if you're not used to hearing trumpets in music, it may turn you off at first.

After repeated listens, and concentrating more on what you're hearing, opinions begin to become more solid on the material or band.

my personal examples:
The Beatles
The Mars Volta
Emperor

edit: there are also albums i have that i've liked for some time, but for one reason or another, it just hits me like a fucking sack of bricks one day, and i appreciate it more.
