Where does the noise gate belong??

So forever I have been using the noise gate after my TS9. Do most of you guys use it before it? What's the difference. I can't test because I'm away right now but I'm reading more and more people using it before the OD.

I have a ISP pro rack G. So it goes in front of the tube screamer and in the loop.

But when I use a normal noise gate I put it before the tube screamer.

What? Why are you guys putting the noise gate before the tubescreamer? That doesn't make sense to me at all.

The tubescreamer boosts and shapes your guitar signal... So, you're essentially using this signal as if it was the actual sound of your guitar. A noise suppression pedal like the ISP Decimator should go after the tubescreamer & before the amp's input. You are gating the noise being amplified by your boost pedal before the signal hits the input of the amp, killing feedback...

Also, with something like the Decimator G String or Pro Rack G, it tracks the input signal coming from your guitar and compares it to the signal coming from the amp's preamp to make sure the threshold stays where it needs to be in order to not kill sustain when you switch to the clean channel. Wouldn't you want the G String to track the signal of guitar+tubescreamer if you had the TS turned on and only track the signal of the guitar when the TS is off to make sure the threshold is balanced and working correctly?

Well I don't know. I suppose I should give it a try. I just figured that I should gate the noise as soon as possible so the boost doesn't boost it.

IMO a noise gate belongs right after the weakest link in the chain which most often is a guitar pickup that most often has quite a low signal to noise ratio if compared to other pieces of equipment in the chain.

Exactly, this is why I put it as the first thing in the chain whenever I have used one.

+1...i agree, i use my ISP Decimator after my ts7....... going to try it the other way too

My thinking is you should treat the whole signal chain as a possible noise source. since you will be picking up noise(60Hz hum) in the Guitar, the instrument cable,OD,effects, ect. I would put the noise suppression last, but before the amp. JMHO

I've never thought about trying this. How are the results? And...do you do the "X" style hookup? I never understood that....

I like it man, I used to use the NS2 before the tubescreamer for gigging as I found it better for stopping feedback, but the TS would always give off a bit of noise when it was on. Putting the TS in the loop means the gate is still being triggered directly from the input of the guitar, but the noise from the TS is also killed off.
