So i have one of these tubes laying around....and ive read that putting a different tube in certain slots can change the tone alittle.

Any suggestions on where to put this? Or not at all?

Thanks!

Edit. Its a 5150.

I've been told thay the first two tubes are for the preamp gain, 3 and 4 are for the fx loop buffer and phase inverter. Not sure if this is 'standard' for most tube amps or not.

In answer to your question - try socket 1. I just bought 2 sovtek 12ax7s for my amp (they only had 2 left) and I'll be putting them in 1 and 2 tonight.

Cheers

This is the way the combo is layed out

V4 is the PI
V3 is the loop tube
V1, V2, & V5 are all gain stages for clean, crunch, and lead.

Powertubes V4-V3-V5-V2-V1

Changing the tube in the V1 position has the biggest impact on changing the tone.

FWIW - Sovtek LPS's are one of my favorite tubes.

This.

The LPSs don't like cathode follower stages, so be sure to look up which positions are cathode followers in your amp before putting that little guy anywhere outside of V1 lest you toast the tube. Same with EH 12ax7s and a couple others I don't remember off the top of my head. (All of which are Russian-made tubes IIRC. JJs and Chinese tubes should be fine wherever.)

I'm changing tubes of a Triaxis.
Original Triaxis has
V1: Mesa 12AX7 SPAX (Lead 1 Input)
V2: Mesa 12AX7 SPAX (Input for all modes)
V3: Mesa 12AX7 (Lead and rythm mixer)
V4: Mesa 12AX7 (Lead 2)
V5: Mesa 12AX7 (FX Return)

And I have new:
1x TUNG SOL
1x SOVTEK LPS
3x ELECTRO HARMONIX

Where would you put the new tubes?
