I love this album, and as I uinderstand it, it is a distinctive 'old Vintersorg' sounding album. Which sounds closest to this?

I'd say "Ödemarkens Son". For there are only 3 albums using this "old" style, you should give "Hedniskhjärtad" a try aswell.

Other than the two said already, you can also try Otyg releases. They're closer to TF than any Vintersorg albums after Ödemarkens Son.

I know, but the band has similarities that I feel connect to the first half of the Vintersorg albums.
I beg to differ. Musically, Otyg and Vintersorg are very different. One being folk metal and the other progressive black metal (right?). They share some lyrical themes though.
I see no clear line between the old and the new Vintersorg. Rather a continuous evolution. Hedniskhjärtad and Till Fjälls are naturally very similar, they where released the same year after all. Ödemarkens Son however is focused much more on the nature romanticism, and the heathen/anti-christian themes from the two earliest albums are toned down a lot.
Cosmic Genesis is the first album with English lyrics, and it focuses more on the "space" themes, but at the same time it has Swedish tracks with Ödemarkens Son style nature romantic lyrics.
