At the Gates is the best and more of an essential, but I prefer In Flames. I even like their newer stuff.

Pray tell, how is anything either of those essentially shit bands released more "sophisticated" than The Red in the Sky is Ours (pretty much THE MOST sophisticated Death Metal release of all fucking time)?!

If you compare their best works, in my opinion The Gallery > The Red in the Sky (marginally)

But if you compare quality over their career, DT >> ATG

They all knew each other, for one. They came from the same scene. They sound similar, but not because they're copycats. Besides which, both IF and DT released stuff far more sophisticated than anything ATG produced.
All great bands, though.

In Flames.

I can dig a little bit of DT, and even less of In Flames (probably because their first disc I listened to was Reroute), so hence ATG is the superior band. Melo-death has a bad habit of all sounding the same to me anyways, tbh.
