We want to record a drumkit soon. The problem is, that this kit needs about 12 mics or more.
How do you guys record your drums? How much mics do I REALY need to get a nice metal kit into my computer?
Which Interface is best for it. I noticed most interfaces are sold with 8 inputs and 8 inputs are a bit too little or what do you think?

thx guys for help!

I usually like having at least 24 ins, you can get away with 8 inputs.

kick
snare
hat/ride
tom1
tom2
(tom3)
oh l
oh r

in that case try talking the drummer into using only 2 toms and use the free mic for ride.

if possible I'll have:

Kick mic
kick trig
snare top
snare bottom
snare trig
hat
tom1 mic
tom1 trig
tom2 mic
tom2 trig
tom3 mic
tom3 trig
tom4 mic
tom4 trig
ride
china
ohl
ohr
room l
room r

=20

perhaps additional mics for the bottom-side of the toms etc = 24

now add a subkick or another second mic for the kick and perhaps a second china.....
so 32 would be best, 24 id cool, too.
16 is sufficient most of the time if you omit the tom triggers.

hey todde, we got the alesis io|26 thats quite decent. it has got 8 inputs and we recorded:
1xkick, 1xsnare (two would be better), 4xtoms and 2xoverheads

sach mal an wann ihr aufnehmt, wenn du bock hast komm ich mal vorbei! falls du noch equipment brauchst kannste auch bescheid geben!
