White stripes shite

They're another one of these so called "new rock revolution bands", basically all the loads of bands coming out who try to be retro to match the current obsession with being retro in the fashion industry, such as...

The Datsuns
The White Stripes
The Libertines
Kings of Leon

i don't like their type of music...sure i like the new shit thats coming out but bands like White Stripes, Evanescence, etc are only making music go downhill...people call it metal, you must be joking :loco:

I actually find them to be of higher quality than some other bands mentioned here. Yes, they were tossed int he whole retro rock phase MTV had, along with bands like The Hives and The Strokes, but this band actually has good songs. That one listed, Dead LEaves, is a great example. I suggest you listen to more of them before writing them off as shit.

They are by far the best retro band. Ball and biscuit is a great song. They are a good band, its just they offer nothing new- just stuff that has been done well 30-40 years ago. Sorta of like how prog metal hasnt offered anything new from 70's material.

I'd say they're pretty decent, particularly the song "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground." While they're certainly not the best thing since sliced bread, they are definitely a much-welcomed breath of fresh air on the radio, I mean, would you prefer Linkin Park?

With all due respect speed, I would say that you're mistaken. Prog-metal is by far my favorite metal genre, so keep in my mind that I'm a little bias, but I can't think of any other subgenre that has developed more and more over time, keeping true to it's sound but always offering something new, fresh and exciting. How can you say that they haven't offered anything new if they've done just the opposite, remaining almost unnoticed while black and death metal remain in the spotlight? I won't mention Dream Theater again since it's become obvious that you don't really fancy them, but have you ever listened to bands like Fates Warning, Symphony-X, Evergrey, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Pagan's Mind, Dreamscape, etc.? These are truly some of the most breathtakingly original bands currently existing, give them a listen before making such a misinformed comment.

Oh, and one last thing, although it's true that progressive music in general started long before that, progressive METAL hadn't begun to take its form until the early 80s when Watchtower and Fates Warning arrived. Just a side-note. :)

I thought Id get someone riled up with that statement. I have heard all of those bands, and no, besides Pain of Salvation, and Symphony x, I really dont see any musical progression or value of any of these bands. They are far too technical, and lacking in any interesting musical ideas. Dream Theater does atttempt many new things, but they never seem to go anywhere, and they are always hampered by needless overly technical soloing.

But hey this is just my opinion, you dont have to agree with it, and I dont car if you listen to prog metal all day.

Porcupine tree is not a metal band.

Very well, fair enough.

I know categorizing music has never been an exact science, but Porcupine Tree IS indeed a metal band. However, there is nothing more pointless than attempting to argue which genre a band fits into, so I suggest we let that be the end of it.
