my computer shutdown like 6 times whilst i was getting the patch, luckily i was using a download manager to get it with, which fixed it up perfectly.

here's a tip though if u have yet to get the patch....

go to run>regedit>hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>my current version>run then delete the thing that has msblast in it, its the very bottom one, windows update or something, then go to system 32 folder in the windows folder through my computer or what ever and delete msblast, also go alt ctrl delete>processess>very bottom one "msblast" go end process

We were hit - at first I thought it was my machine, then I realised it didn't happen when Bev's machine (which is networked to mine) wasn't on. I installed a firewall on my machine for now (which blocks msblast from sending anything to my box) until I have time to get on Bev's and sort it out... CUNTS!

I've never once had a problem with my less-than-legal version of XP.

What I posted in Chat http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105151

Was pretty funny when I worked out what had gone on. We subcontract out our IT, and it was the IT company showing us about internet security.

And the warning was on a heavy metal bulletin board some 24 hours before we got belted.

I've coined the term at work "MINCOMpetent".

I shoulda read this thread last night, and looked like a genius today.

We were in a training course, on internet security just before lunch, when the trainer's computer had those messages and went down.

Training was over (for some strange reason), so went back to my workstation, and the whole fucking network was down.

For the rest of the day.

The day was not altogether wasted, as the topic immediately before internet security was about "clean desk", where you have nothing e-mail related on your desk to stop prying eyes from getting hints.

I'd forgotten what colour my desk actually was for a few weeks.

Yes it's just XP and 2000. Nothing to do with 9x.

Here are the patches anyway. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980

Here are the direct links to the patch:
Windows XP - http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2354406C-C5B6-44AC-9532-3DE40F69C074&displaylang=en
Windows 2000 - http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C8B8A846-F541-4C15-8C9F-220354449117&displaylang=en

And yes Terry you have to remove it from your registry and your computer.

There you go.

I have not had problems with XP (though I have hardly used it as I hate it so much), and haven't had many problems with 98. 98 is just so much more comfortable and simple to use. XP blows.

There's a tonne of changes with XP from all the other systems, damn thing irritates me especially with networking and un-necessary processes.

98 is fairly easy to use.

But using a non windows OS is more solid. Hmm Linux RedHat or Mandrake.

Ending the Worm process
  • To end the Trojan process:
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once.
    2. Click Task Manager.
    3. Click the Processes tab.
    4. Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes.
    5. Scroll through the list and look for msblast.exe.
    6. If you find the file, click it, and then click End Process.
    7. Exit the Task Manager
Now you can install the patch and remove it off your system. Thats if you can't be bothered following the link.

I've been so tempted to go to Linux, it's just a matter of being convinced that it's an easy (and worthwhile) switch... (ie, able to find apps that do all that I need to do)

I recommend having ZoneAlarm installed on your computer. It's an awesome firewall I've had for a while. I got hit by that worm yesterday, and kept getting shut down, so I enabled ZoneAlarm when I reconnected to the net and then the virus couldn't have any effect because everytime it tried to do anything on the computer ZoneAlarm would ask me if I would let it so I could just say no hahah!

That gave me time to download the patch (I got the Panda Quick Remove thing) which got rid of all traces of it on the computer.

So now I'm free of it and ZoneAlarm won't let it come back.
