The Houston area’s first local resident to be diagnosed with swine flu has been confirmed in Fort Bend County.

Officials at Fort Bend County’s health department said early Wednesday evening that they just received confirmation of the case from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The resident, a teenage girl, was not hospitalized and is recovering, said the officials. She is a student in Bellaire at Episcopal High School, which starting Thursday will close through the weekend.

The illness started in the middle of last week, and she was treated by a private medical center. She had not recently traveled to Mexico.

The confirmation came a half a day after the CDC announced that a nearly 2-year-old Mexico City boy who fell ill in Brownsville and was transported for treatment at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston was the first U.S. death.

I grew up and my dad currently lives in Fort Bend. I'm not too worried about me, but more for my 21 month daughter. We should make it through just fine.

On the bright side... we have a President who actually believes in science, as opposed to one who would just assume this is one of god's plagues and respond by praying for divine forgiveness.

I can't see 1918 repeating itself under any circumstances. So many of the circumstances that made that spread possible no longer exist today.

Associated Press said:
CAIRO – Egypt's government was hoping to look strong and proactive in the swine flu scare with its decision to slaughter all the country's pigs, after taking heavy criticism at home for poor planning and corruption in past crises.

But instead, some Egyptians called the move a knee-jerk overreaction that even the World Health Organization said was unnecessary.

Egypt, which has no swine flu cases, is the only country in the world to order a mass pig slaughter in response to the disease. The move mirrored Egypt's battle with bird flu, in which the government killed 25 million birds within weeks in 2006.

Yeah, I read about that. Unbelievable.

Anyway, love the frame where he's putting another pair of sunglasses on hahahahaha

A United Airlines flight from Munich to Washington has been diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport because a female passenger complained of flu symptoms, an airport official said.

Flight 903, a 777 containing 245 passengers and 16 crew, has been isolated in the north cargo area of the airport, said airport spokesman Phil Orlandella.

One patient was removed from the plane and was being taken to Masachusetts General Hospital, said Jennifer Mehigan, a spokeswoman for Boston Emergency Medical Services. The other passengers are expected to stay on board and continue to Washington after refueling, airport officials said.

A United Airlines spokesman didn't immediately return a message seeking comment. Flight 903 left Munich at 5:32 a.m. Eastern time, headed for Dulles International Airport outside of Washington. It arrived in Boston at 1:46 p.m, according to the airline's website.

Television footage showed the plane on the airfield with its forward door open and firefighters and other emergency workers conferring at the top of rolling stairs, with an ambulance parked at the bottom. A refueling truck was parked nearby.

It's funny how the World Health Organization was all up in a tizzy when this minor outbreak swept Rancho el Moocho. Now after witnessing mass hysteria across the globe they're beginning to downplay it. Confirmed deaths are now down to 10.

I haven't been following this closely but someone told me that what people are dying of is pneumonia as a sideeffect to the swineflu. I was also told that pneumonia kills 2000 people in Sweden alone every year (in a population of over 9 million).
