Back to the different tastes topic...I grew up listening to alt rock in the mid nineties with matchbox twenty and stuff like that...and I still like it to a point...I like the catchiness of the music and the vocals about girlfriends and junk..then I started listening to older music like southern rock, charlie daniels, and lynyrd skynyrd mainly...
I just listened to classic rock mainly...then I heard enter the sandman and entered my metallica craze in like 8th grade lol..then I got all of their cd's..then I swore off the black album and stuck to old school metallica...about the only other music I listened to in that era was iron maiden...which was an impulse buy..but that was about it.
Then my friend gives me a cassette tape that has a bunch of metal on it...so my car only has a cassette player so I listen to that one tape on the way to and from school for like a month...it had stuff like iced earth, dimmu borgir, nightwish, cob! Lol, in flames (oh noes), and junk like that. You may not like that stuff, but it was very cool for me at the time. After that my favorite bands in the world were iced earth and children of bodom. And dimmu.
So after a while I get acclimated to the metal scene on my own, I check out some music for myself...this whole time after the cassette tape all I listen to is metal. So then I find some other cool bands...I like mostly fast solos and energetic stuff like bodom. I got into ozzy a lot too and still love those two albums in late eighties early nineties.
Opeth was a major milestone in my listening career. I impulse bought bwp....and after listening to it at home I had no clue how many songs I had listened to or if it was just one song....the actual song blackwater park I thought was like 2 songs cuz of the slow part...I was attracted to the music for the acoustic stops that were addictive...because I liked the acoustic stuff iced earth did...
But after listening to it awhile I started liking everything about the band...then I heard about pt...and I hadnt listened to anything that wasn't metal in a while, and swore that I hated everything that wasnt metal...but I liked pt...and the more I listened to it, the more it opened my mind...
And I generally hated rap to, but I have to admit I like old school west coast rap. I secretly listen to dr. Dre, and nwa alone sometimes lol. Ive discovered that vocal lines and beats can be good music to o, even if its not technical at all. It just sounds cool. Of course you can't listen to it a lot or it gets stale, but I have to say I like it when i'm in the mood.
And I used to hate new punk rock and pop rock and stuff, but I have to say smashing pumpkins, coldplay, chili peppers, and foo fighters have some of the coolest atmosphere and vocals and emotion. Thats what I like most about a song...if it has emotion and a cool atmosphere. Doesnt necessarily have to be mind blowing technicality. I also like willie nelson and waylon jennings when im in the mood...and also like wanking yngwie malmsteen when im in the mood...
Pretty much depending what mood im in I can like any piece of music....if your lonely and depressed...porcupine tree....if your lonely and depressed and angry...april ethereal. If your just pissed off...death metal or black metal...if your tired or contemplative...sky moves sideways, or damnation..at least thats how it goes with me.
And sometimes I just don't have the attention span to listen to black rose immortal or deliverance...sometimes I dont want to listen to metal at all its too heavy and the drums and vocals are too obnoxious and I need something soft and soothing like collapse the light into earth or lips of ashes or something...and then sometimes thats totally boring and I have to have heavy stuff....and then some times i'm in the mood to hear some energetic cheesy finnish scorching solo stuff, and thats why I liked cob.
As far as arriving somewhere but not here goes...I have to be in the right mood to listen to it...cuz it takes to long to build up to the first chorus...i'll just change the song on my ipod or something. Windowpane takes a while too....but both songs have some of the greatest atmospheres....like mikaels solos in both...and when the music just kind of stops and they go back to their respective main riffs...emotion...btw two things ive tried this week that really fit the mood....listening to heartattack in a layby while laying down in my car after work...listening to her ghost in the fog while it was a torrential downpour on the way home from work....cool atmospheres.
Lips of ashes rules when your on college campus at night and your just watching all these people walking around and you see all the night colors of brake lights, red lights, and they all just blurr together and its like the whole world is gliding along to the music in your head. Music rules.
