NicosexmiC, get a Fender Jazz bass standard, shits are really versatile and pretty cheap, I think like $300 US brand new.

yeah, my friend has one of those and I was thinking about it. The only thing is that my friend keeps the action of that bass about half an inch up. WTF is he thinking?

That's fucking stupid man, you can really injure yourself that way. Shouldn't be too much more than 1/8" action at best. I have both of mine set up a bit low because it forces me to play softer which leads to better dynamic control and much less fatigue for long sessions. I used to beat the shit out of these things and always demanded high action, but I learned that's not smart a few years ago.

Note that I don't have a Jazz, I have a Precision for ulimate BALLS TONE (nothing has more bass than a P-bass), but Jazz are really fun and have a great variety. You can get a great midrange growl out of those things, which is pretty sweet when done properly.

What are you looking to do with the bass, just the basics, or some specific tone / playing style?

If you want bottom, go for something w/ a split single coil (P-bass style pickup), or maybe a humbucker. I like Fender because you get a good solid build and predictable tone, and their cheap instruments are pretty good. Or like an Ibanez Soudgear, I haven't played one for years but I remember even the entry-level ones being quite nice.

Or just send me your tracks and I'll lay down some bottom end for you, I'm working with 3 seperate people doing the exact same thing right now, and I quite enjoy it.

I hate drum programming (too sterile for me), but I love laying down my own beats. Buy me some drum mics and we'll talk.

It's been a goal of mine to accumulate a bunch of instruments and create my own semi-professional studio. Unfortunately instruments and equipment is goddamn expensive. Hopefully in a few years I'll have a drumkit, some decent amps (mmmmm... there's a Sunn amp at a store back in the city my university is in for $1000... I hope its still there in a few years) and some recording mics.

Sunn amps = win. I want one, and I did before I even knew who the fuck Sunn O))) were.

I have two basses, two bass amps, one decent drumset, a drum machine, a beaten clarinet, an acoustic guitar, a lost harmonica (no idea where it went). I'm getting a replacement harmonica for Xmas, and I'm looking into buying a new clarinet, oboe, or bassoon right now. Aiming for the oboe, I've always (as in for 17 years now) really fucking wanted to learn to play that instrument. Not to toot my own horn, but I was a fucking badass on clarinet when I still played the damn thing, and think I could pick up the oboe quite easily if my memory is still intact. Wow, this is a bit of a long/rambling post. Damn I'm bored and I awake. Blah blah.

BTW I reckon Jazz basses are ugly. Don't like the body shape. OIM, how are Squier Standard Precisions -- from a perspective of "I am not a bassist, I just want to fuck around and demo songs on the computer" and not for professional use/gigging/etc?

Hm... Squier Precision Basses are okay for what you said you'd be doing. But in complete honesty, you'd be better off getting a Squier Jazz Bass- they cost a little bit more, but they are higher quality and have a really wide tonal range. Either way... both will be fine for screwing around - they really don't sound that bad. People who bash Squiers are idiots.

I'm not nad, so i guess my opinion is worthless, but I'd say go for it- definitely. I use an Ibanez that cost 300... an SG400 (thats what you hear on recordings) and its a very nice bass.
