City beneath the surface
Over the weekend I made a visit to the Disc Exchange in Knoxville, TN and picked up a disc from the band Wolf called The Black Flame. I've overheard conversations about this band during ProgPower weekend, plus a few people have mentioned the band on various threads throughout the year. To be honest, I was a little skeptic going into this cd, because I wasn't really expecting much. With that said, during the first track I realized that this was sounding like a top tier power metal release. Everything from the vocals, musicanship and production is first class! I love the lyrics as well, because I'm thinking these guys dig horror movies to an extent. It's kind of appropriate for this time of year! :) If you like powermetal at all, then I highly recommend this release, especially to those of you like myself that are down with the Sabaton stuff.

WOLF rules!!!!!

True classic HEAVY traditional metal.

I guess you could say like Maiden, but heavier than that.
Almost a cross between Priest, EARLY Accept, and King Diamond.

The only thing I've heard of theirs was their debut, which was complete Maiden worship. Have they progressed beyond that?

Zod

Zod, I really don't think these guys are looking to progress per se. With that said, I agree with Jasonic that their sound is more meaty than say Maiden. There's no denying that these guys are Maiden fans though. Again, I agree with Jasonic that I hear the King Diamond influence as well, especially in the lyrics. It's good stuff if you're looking to get entertained.

On a side note, I can totally see these guys kickin' some ass at a future ProgPower.

If you like The Black Flame, you would most definitely like the other 3 albums-- I'd pick up the s/t or Evil Star next-- although Wolf doesn't change too much with each release, those two albums are always the 2 I go for when I need a fix.

Agreed, I think EVIL STAR and THE BLACK FLAME are their two best.

Also, I believe they just entered the studio this month to begin their next!

I hope they make it to the US for a full tour.
As far as I know, their only US appearance thus far has been BWBK Fest.

That's what I'm afraid of! I'm a completist if I dig a band, so I'll eventually get the other three.

I saw Wolf back in 2003 at the BW&BK 6-Pack concert in Cleveland. The Swedish NWOBHM worshipers put on an amazing show...very entertaining, great light show and all members excelled. After their set they hung out in the crowd to watch the rest of the bands sharing stories and a few beverages. Very nice guys. I know they have had a few lineup changes since then but the one constant is the lead singer. I highly recommend getting all of their releases. :kickass: Oh, and by the way, this was an amazing 2-day event at a crappy venue...but Trouble and Candlemass rounded out the weekend.

Hey Jasonic,

Yep...I live in downtown Chicago...literally...near the Chicago River and a mere 15 minute walk to the House of Blues. Last HOB concert I was at was Sonata and Nightwish...before that I was at the Firewind/Dark Tranquility/Arch Enemy concert. I'm a long time lurker on the ProgPower USA forum (attended PPUSA 3, 6-9 and will every year til it ends) and chime in every now and then. As for my Cleveland experience...to see Trouble and Candlemass back to back was something I will never forget...and this was Trouble with Eric and Candlemass with Messiah. Both had incredible sets and to see Messiah do the "Doom Dance" was priceless. We are doing what we can to keep Chicago METAL!!!

Nope..couldn't make it...it was my Niece's 11th B-day...duty called. :) I have seen Edguy 3 times but amazingly have never seen Kamelot, and I am a big fan too. It seems like everytime they are in the area I have a prior committment. That's why I keep holding out hope that they will return to ProgPower USA one day...that way I KNOW I will see them. I'm considering going to Mago de Oz...I have a couple of their CD's and dig the style. I'm not one that needs to sing along...I'm more into the music. It looks like we have veered off the tracks a bit on this Wolf thread, but are there any good shows coming up in the city or the burbs? I know Dimmu, Moonspell, and Danzig will be at the Congress in a few days...

I was evesdropping on a conversation at Exploding Ned's table this year about Wolf. Some guy, and it might have been you, said that watching Wolf at the 6 pack concert was like watching Maiden back in 83! Needless to say, it sparked my interest in exploring the band. :) I don't know much about Trouble, I have to admit, but I am a Candlemass fan. That sounds like it was a killer show!

I had to resurrect my old Wolf thread. I came across the s/t at a CD store in Nashville recently. Killer stuff indeed! I honestly don't say this too much, because it's said 20 times per day about 20 different bands. With that said, I can't help myself......Glenn, this band would go over quite well here at ProgPower! If I had the money, this would be the band I would choose to sponsor. :kickass:

what can i say, it is one of my favorite groups....
if somebody has listened to the album
i am crazy for the song Black Magic
specially when the band gets into these line

"...I hardly remember the days I was free
The time prior to your spell
As an ignorant fool, writing hymns onto thee
I drank from your poisonous well
Those days are gone just like you
You left me to wither and die
After you drained me you drank my blood
Raise your cup to the princess of the night"

they are one of the most underrated bands

I was at that show with Dustin/Sheri from K5 and Wolf was fucking incredible. Trouble though brought down the house. Even Messiah commented at the end of his first song "how am I supposed to follow up that performance". Eric Wagner and the band was spot on the whole set.

Brian!
Happy you found one of my favorite bands.
Wolf will never let you down, not on cd or on stage. Pure, true and real Heavy Metal at its core.
All their albums are highly recommended.

Also, in the vain of NWOBHM style Swedish metal, check out bands Enforcer and Bullet. Class
