Working with drummers and drum programming question

How do most producers/engineers approach this. If you are using only programmed drums, do you usually let the drummer program them or program them yourself from listening to a recording or is there some other method? I googled this but couldn't find a way to word it to get any results.

I mic up his shitty kit and use that for the arrangement. I don't see any reason to change what he is going to play live just because we are using superior drummer.

I have him play the ekit if he is willing.


Either way it's his drum arrangement.

Right now because of budget issues I don't have the recourses to record live drums. I didn't think of an electronic set though. This would probably be ideal for my situation.

As above, your job as a producer doesn't necessarily cover writing, so if the drummer is able to program his own drums, then let him! If he's not experienced with doing this, I would try either programming them with him, or go to his rehearsal space and just film him playing through the songs, then program it after that.
