Maintenant, grâce à Wormfood, enfoncez-vous dans les tumultes de la France, une France glauque, malsaine, désagréable, scandaleuse, que vous vous refusiez peut-être à vous avouer. Laissez-vous envahir par ce spectacle sonore décadent qui tentera de vous ouvrir les yeux sur ce pays honteux que vous osez encore habiter. Découvrez le premier groupe de métal franchouillard et son dernier disque, qui vous dépeindra ce monde méprisable qui vous entoure. Spectacle en 11 tableaux, moins d’une heure pour assouvir vos envies de sonorités musicales et plus particulièrement de métal, quelles qu’elles soient, puisque vous pourrez vous délecter tour à tour de la noirceur d’un black pédophile, d’un doom assaisonné à la décadence de la cour du roi soleil, d’un brutal death nihiliste, mais aussi d’une variété complètement avariée, d’ambiant gothique forain, d’une comptine enfantine d’handicapé ou de baroque en décrépitude. Pis encore, d’improbables mélanges s’opéreront sous l’égide de conteurs sarcastiques et cyniques. N’ayez pas peur de ce projet ambitieux, qui vous emmènera entrevoir une France vulgaire et pâteuse, à travers l’espace et le temps. De Paris à notre foire campagnarde, de l’occupation romaine à celle des dessous de ponts, venez assister aux scènes de décrépitudes les plus loufoques.
Au delà d’un concept auquel il fallait s’attaquer, Wormfood propose ici un album totalement burlesque où l’auditeur se retrouve malmené grâce à une musique totalement hétérogène, entrecoupée de scènes tout aussi dénuées de rapports entre elle. Et c’est bien là le défaut de ce France. On a du mal à saisir le sens réel du tout. Quel est le rapport entre un clochard ivre rendant sa vinasse et un prof d’histoire relatant l’utilité du processus de momification ? Chaque passage est bien ficelé certes, tout s’enchaîne plutôt bien malgré de regrettables clichés, mais on a finalement du mal à sentir une cohésion toute propre au groupe. Ce constat peut également être étendu à la musique, puisqu’il s’agit bien là de musique me direz-vous. Wormfood s’applique à distiller tout un éventail de styles musicaux, allant, je l’ai dit, majoritairement dans les genres métal. Là également, on a vraiment du mal à sentir une personnalité cohérente liée à une entité. On a droit pêle mêle à des passages divers et variés, tous plutôt bien faits, mais qui sonnent comme déjà ressentis, ailleurs. Ce France ne serait-il donc qu’un enchevêtrement de ce qui se fait de mieux dans les styles de métal les plus en vogue ? Assurément non, car on ressent un travail énorme et une volonté de faire quelque chose d’original. Mais à développer un concept aussi étrange, le groupe n’aurait-il pas un peu perdu la musique en elle-même de vue ? Je ne dis pas là qu’elle a été bâclée, car sauf quelques facilités, la qualité est au rendez-vous, mais une qualité impersonnelle, dont on sent qu’elle a pioché sa légitimité ailleurs. Très dommage car France perd ici ce qui aurait pu être sa clé de voûte.
Finalement très en rapport avec des productions françaises récentes, GTI et Gronibard (dans un registre différent certes) en tête, Wormfood continue dans la voie du métal touche à tout, inondé de scènes théatrales. France est un album travaillé, à n’en point douter, aux ambitions certainement hautes, mais peut-être pas assumées jusqu’au bout. La cohésion, tant musicale que globale eut mérité un tant soit peu plus d’attention, ou du moins de personnalité. Rassurez-vous pourtant mesdames, messieurs, France est un bon disque, et il saura vous distraire plus d’une fois, comme il a si bien su le faire avec moi.

Ranskalainen Wormfood ilmoittaa musiikillisen tyylisuuntansa olevan “decadent extreme-metal”. Tämä omintakeinen tyyli on kuulemma saavutettu yhdistelemällä doomia, thrashia, deathia, goottia, punkkia, poppia, klassista, barokkia ja jazzia ennakkoluulottomalla tavalla. Mansikkana kakun päällä on vielä hyvä annos mustaa huumoria. Kylläpä tämä on taas niin ranskalaista...
Lyhyemmin sanottuna Wormfoodin keitos on outoa metallin sukuista musiikkia ilman minkäänlaisia raja-aitoja. Levyltä löytyy seitsemän varsinaista kappaletta sekä neljä lyhyempää raitaa, joiden anti on usein aivan muuta kuin musiikillista. Välinumeroissa mm. spurgut ärjyvät, laatta lentää ja välillä ollaan sirkuksessa. Samoin itse kappaleissa saattavat tunnelmat vaihtua kertaheitolla laidasta toiseen, eikä mistään voi koskaan olla oikein varma. Tällaisessa Fellinimäisessä surrealismin ilotulituksessa on jatkuvana vaarana se, että kuulijat vieraannutetaan ylitselyövällä outoudella ja itseensäpäin kääntyneellä elitismillä. Wormfoodin tapauksessa tämä ei jää aina pelkäksi uhaksi sillä kun laulukielenäkin palvelee pelkkä ranska, sitä jää auttamatta ulos suuresta osasta tarinaa. Usein tuntuukin siltä kuin olisi keskellä tyystin seonneen Tim Burtonin ohjaamaa vinoutunutta painajaista, paitsi että audioraita on vaihtunut vahingossa ranskalaiseksi.
Extreme-metal nimikettä perustelevat raskaat kitarat, nopeat junttauskluokittelemaan tätä kiekkoa vain metallialbumiksi, sillä keitoksessa on mukana niin paljon muitakin aineksia. Seesteiset melodiset kohdat, jolloin säestyksestä vastaa pelkistetyimmillään pelkkä piano, värittävät outoa tarinaa tasaisin väliajoin. Tästä syntyy aivan omanlaisensa outo vaikutelma, aivan kuin ohtaukset sekä kappaleiden hetkittäinen ylimetallisuus. Silti en lähtisi aina silloin tällöin laulajan taustabändinä toimisi viikkoja absinttia yhtämittaisesti kitannut Opeth.
France on henkisesti raskas levy, jonka kuuntelu vaatii kaiken huomion. Sen oudon satumaiset ja synkän painajaismaiset visiot ovat sitä laatua, joka jää helposti kummittelemaan alitajunnan kellareihin. Vaikea, haastava, äärimmäinen – mutta heille jotka löytävät tästä kaikesta sen punaisen langan, myös varmasti palkitseva kokemus.

Die französische Band "Wormfood" lädt den Metal Hörer auf eine eigenwillige Reise durch ein heutiges Frankreich ein, die unser Nachbarland nicht als gemütliches, romantisches und sonnenverwöhntes Land zeigt, sondern mit diesem Konzept-Album eine düstere Abrechnung mit der französischen Gesellschaft liefert, die genau an dem oben genannten Bild nicht unerheblich kratzt.
Das Intro von "France" lässt mich sofort an meine Zeit erinnern, als ich die französische Sprache in der Schule lernte. Man meint, es wäre die zusätzliche Hörkassette zu den Lernbüchern für Französisch als Fremdsprache. Wie der Beginn schon vermuten lässt, hat die Band eine gute Portion Ironie, die der geneigte Hörer an den Texten heraushört, die in Englisch und Französisch gehalten sind. Berechtigt fällt nun die Frage, wie Französisch zu Metal passt, handelt es sich doch um eine sehr melodiöse Sprache. Da belehrt uns Sänger "El Worm" eines besseren, denn tatsächlich vereint sich die Musik gut mit den englischen und französischen Texten. Die Entscheidung von "Wormfood", Textpassagen abwechselnd in den zwei Sprachen zu singen, empfinde ich als sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn es schränkt den Hörer ein, sollte ihm eine der beiden Sprachen nicht geläufig sein. So ziehe ich auch die Tracks vor, die durchgehend in Englisch, bzw. Französisch gehalten sind. Für die notwendige Abwechslung im Gesang sorgt "El Worm durch seine cleanen Vocals und Growls. Textlich nehmen "Wormfood" auch kein Blatt vor dem Mund, als Beispiel möchte ich "View pédophile" nennen, dass wie es der Titel schon andeuten lässt, in sehr eindringlicher Weise das heikle Thema der Pädophilie behandelt.
Musikalisch bedienen sich die Franzosen aus den verschiedenen Metal Bereichen. Wirkt es beim ersten Durchlauf der CD noch, als hätten "Wormfood" ihren eigenen Stil nicht gefunden, beugt genau diese Vielfalt bei mehrmaligem Hören dadurch einem Ermüdungsfaktor vor. Doch sie bleiben nicht dabei, einfach bekannte Klischees des Metals zu verwenden, reichern sie die Tracks doch zusätzlich mit Sound- und Sprachsamples auf Französisch an, die ihnen eine persönliche Note geben. So wird man in "Daguerréotype" in einer unheimliche gruselige Atmosphäre versetzt, , die durch einen Chor hervorgerufen wird, um sofort zu "Miroir de chair" überzuleiten.
Vereinzelt sind auch traditionelle französische Instrumente zu hören, die man einfach aus einem anderen Kontext kennt, die sich aber gut dem gesamten musikalischen Rahmen anpassen.
Einen besonderen Track hervorzuheben, würde dem Album nicht gerecht werden, hat es durchweg eine sehr hohe Qualität. Das italienische Label Code666 hat schon mit Bands wie "Aborym", "Handful of Hate" oder "Void of Silence" bewiesen, dass guter Metal nicht nur aus Skandinavien kommen kann, sondern auch aus den wärmeren, südlicheren Ländern Europas und da machen auch "Wormfood" keine Ausnahme.
