Vi tar här del av något som kan liknas vid dekadenta absintpåverkade bohemer på strövartåg genom bakgatorna i det parisianska sekelskiftet. Såhär hade det troligtvis låtit om det hade funnits elgitarrer och syntar på den tiden, så det råder inget tvivel om att undertecknad höjde lite extra på ögonbrynen åt den här besynnerliga upplevelsen. Jag som älskar det som är pretentiöst och blaserat konstnärligt, skulle själv inte ha något emot att bli utslängd från självaste Moulin Rouge, bara för att sitta med mina förskjutna trosförvanter på någon obskyr och politiskt inkorrekt källarkrog och läsa poesi. Men tyvärr så är man ett sekel efter, och då får man nöja sig med att drömma sig tillbaka till de svunna tiderna genom musik och konst, som med den här plattan.
Bandet WORMFOOD balanserar på en tunn tråd mellan genialitet och galenskap med sitt gotiskt betonade opus; France. Man har verkligen agerat ut till max här och det märks att man vetat vad man gjort eller ja, iallafall för det mesta. Sånt här kan nog faktiskt inte klämmas fram ur konstnärsnerven om man inte är lite smått vettvillig. Vad som helst kan hända och det finns ingen utväg. Du kommer förmodligen vakna upp med värsta musikaliska baksmällan. WORMFOOD har lekt väldigt mycket med det bohemiska och dekadenta, det druckna och nebulösa. De framställer en värld där vi slipper ta ansvar, och en väldigt skön sådan faktiskt. Man varvar mörker med besatthet, ilska med besinningslös humor i ett virrvarr av mångfacetterad kreativ briljans. Det finns mycket att hämta här om man har tid, lust och tålamod.
Jag personligen kan känna att man blir lite less efter ett tag. Det blir för mycket av det goda och France tappar tråden någonstans i mitten av det kontrollerade kaoset. Kanske behöver den mer eftertänksamhet än vad jag gett den, eller så har jag kanske inte lyssnat in mig tillräckligt omsorgsfullt jag vet inte. Oavsett så är det en mycket bra platta, en sjuhelvetes festivitet som bjuder på mycket hallucigent hänförande i sitt makabra och överkultiverade uttryck.

Dopo aver ascoltato questo album di debutto dei francesi Wormfood intitolato France sono tornato con la mente ai tempi del liceo, magari avessi avuto una professoressa di francese tale da reggere il confronto con la genialità e l'originalità di questa band, di sicuro adesso nella mia mente sarebbero rimaste impresse molte più regole grammaticali.
Ma alla fine poco male, gli Wormfood con questo debutto discografico mi ridanno una bella spolverata, visto che il concept in questione è un tentativo (ben riuscito) di rappresentare musicalmente la variopinta società francese, e deve essere molto eterogenea poichè stilisticamente questo disco parte da una base prettamente metallica per toccare lidi una volta jazz, un'altra pop, poi folk, per poi in seguito riassestarsi su venature doomy, gothic con qualche spruzzata thrash/death metal.
France è veramente un prodotto innovativo e fresco che si avvale per quanto riguarda la produzione di un altro pazzo come Alex, leader incontrastato dei Carnival In Coal, e questo la dice lunga.
Molto interessanti risultano le strutture musicali dei brani, che a parte la fortissima dose di sperimentazione, si rivelano sempre ben equilibrati ed evitano quel fastidioso senso di "senza capo nè coda" che spesso emerge in altri lavori del genere, chi ha detto "Catch 33" dei Meshuggah!? (Pazzo! NdR)
Ma anche l'apparato più squisitamente lirico non è da meno, i cambi di lingua del singer durante lo scorrere del brano sono molto naturali e ben inseriti, insomma la solita ciliegina sulla torta che rende il risultato finale ancora più originale.
Non è un Lp facile questo è ovvio, ma è un esperimento che con il tempo e anche con una buona di pazienza (e anche apertura mentale oserei dire) si farà apprezzare, ed è proprio da quel momento che inizierà a lievitare nelle vostre menti fino ad impossessarvi completamente del vostro cervello. Per tutti gli amanti di Arcturus, Carnival In Coal, Finntroll, Atheist... fatelo vostro!
